Athletics at Northview High School

Athletics at Northview High School is viewed as part of the educational process. Although many NHS students continue as college athletes, what the students-athletes gain from their high school athletic experience is the primary goal. The NHS athletic program does not principally serve as a feeder system for college athletics, or as entertainment for our school community.

The pursuit of team accomplishment, being involved in something bigger than one’s self, is the method through which many positive lessons are derived. It is the singleness of purpose, not the win itself, which serves as a powerful vehicle for learning and reward. Accepting and fulfilling one’s role in the team’s success is often a difficult but gratifying experience in athletics.

In fulfilling the role as educator, you can expect the NHS Coach to encourage individual excellence within the context of team success. He will also provide answers to reasonable questions concerning treatment or handling of student-athletes. Because of the emotional potential of such situations, inquiries should be made through appointment only. Coaches should not be approached at contests or practices concerning such issues.

The success of Northview Athletic teams is viewed as a result of the efforts of many groups. Students, coaches, parents, staff, and administration working in the singleness of purpose is essential for these educational goals to be met.

Code of Conduct

  1. All athletes must adhere to both the guidelines in the Fulton County Schools Student/Parent Handbook for GHSA Sanctioned Interscholastic Activities and the Northview Student/Parent Handbook.
  1. All swimmers and divers are required to have a current medical history/physical on file. The physical must be on the Fulton County form. Failure to meet this requirement will make you ineligible to participate in the 2015-2016 season (GHSA rule).
  1. All swimmers must attend every practice and every meet unless there is a legitimate excuse. (Illness, Death in the family, USS practices or meets. USS swimmers must swim a minimum of 4000 yards per practice/5 days per week to exempt NHS morning practices. This will be verified through your coach)
  1. All swimmers must give 100% at every practice and meet.
  1. Morning practices will be at 6:00-7:00 am at Swim Atlanta/Johns Creek. You must be on time.
  1. All athletes must travel to swim meets with the team when transportation is provided. Travel home may be with a parent, and only after the “Permission to Ride Home with Parent Form” is filled out completely and given to the coach prior to departure to the meet. NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE HIS/HERSELF TO OR FROM A SWIM MEET. (Fulton County Policy)
  1. All swimmers must stay until the score is announced at dual meets. A swimmer may leave an Invitational meet when all of his or her events have concluded.
  1. To ensure the propriety of the athletes and to protect the coaching staff, when the team requires overnight travel there will be no male athletes in female athletes’ rooms and no female athletes in male athletes’ rooms. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in the athlete being dismissed from the team (Fulton County Policy). Please note: All bags are subject to search before they are loaded on to the bus. Also, if you are found in possession of any inappropriate materials, you will be sent home at your parents’ expense and be removed from the team. Since you all are responsible student-athletes, the coaches are confident that there will not be any problems of this sort.
  1. All athletes are expected to participate in fund- raising activities.
  1. Team members will display proper respect and sportsmanship toward coaches, officials, administrators, fellow competitors and the public.
  1. Club swimmers are required to inform the coaches of their availability at least three weeks prior to each meet.
  1. Students are at Northview to learn. If you are unable to keep passing grades, you are subject to dismissal from the team. If you must attend a morning help session for school or make up work missed, you must let Coach Cianciolaor Coach Brownknow in writing at least 24 hours prior to that help session. Excessive absences (all or partial) from practices or meets due to help session will lead to an assumption that the student needs to concentrate more on studies and will be subject to dismissal from the team to do so.
  1. Athletics and other extra-curricular activities are a privilege. Swimmers and divers must earn that privilege. Dedication is one way to earn it. Swimmers or divers who are involved in another activity or early classes which cause them to miss practices or meets (all or partial) will need to choose between swimming and the other activities.
  1. Swimmers will qualify for a letter on a time and point standard in dual meets, invitational meets and the state meet in addition to other requirements. Time standard will be the same as last season.

Lettering Policy

A swimmer or diver will be eligible for, but not guaranteed to earn a Varsity Letter if the following criteria are met:

  1. Adhere to the Fulton County and Northview Swimming and Diving code of conduct.
  2. All swimmers and divers must attend all of the scheduled meets unless otherwise excused by the coach. A Northview Practice/Meet Absentee Form must be filled out completely and given to the coach.
  3. Meet lettering time qualifications stated below in one event. (Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman.)
  4. Seniors will receive a letter ONLY if they have swam all four years and have not received a letter

specified by the NFHS and in the NFHS Rules Book. The first dive will maintain its assigned degree of difficulty, unless it is more than 1.8, in which case it will receive no more than 1.8 degree of difficulty. Dives 2-6 shall be one dive from each of the five (5) groups (forward, backward, reverse, inward, and twisting). The degree of difficulty of dives 2-6 when totaled shall be equal to or greater than 10.4 for both boys and girls. The score to be achieved must be 200 points or more.

2) 11-DIVE FORMAT: If the 11-dive format is utilized and submitted, it shall be on the official 11-dive sheet. For girls, the minimum degree of difficulty for optional dives shall be 11.5 when totaled, and the score to be achieved must be 270 points or greater. For boys, the minimum degree of difficulty for optional dives shall be 12.0 when totaled, and the score to be achieved must be 270 points or greater. NOTE: The official 11-dive Checklist as well as the 6-Dive and 11-Dive Forms can be found on the GHSA web site (

B. In both the 6-dive and 11-dive formats, the meet must be scored by at least, but not limited to, three (3) judges. The official dive sheet that is submitted must be completed with all necessary signatures and information provided, such as phone, and e-mail information for the coach and diver, within one (1) week of the performance.

C. Proof of Performance:

1. Only one Proof of Performance (POP) dive sheet per diver may be submitted by fax (678-395-4475), mail (2010 Willshire Glen, Alpharetta, GA 30009) or scanned and e-mailed ().

2. If the diver's POP is accepted and approved, the name of the diver and school affiliation will appear on the GHSA web site ( If the POP dive sheet is in any way incorrect, the coach will be notified and one (1) additional POP may be submitted, if desired.

3. Dive sheets with electronically generated scores will not be accepted.

2. The format and criteria required for the state dive sheet shall comply with Section 4 - Choice of Dives that is detailed in the current NFHS Rules Book for championship meets. The sheet must be completed with the signatures, phone number and e-mail address of both the diver and coach.

3. A diver will be automatically entered in the State Meet upon receipt of the actual dive sheet by the deadline and approval of the dive sheet by the GHSA.

4. The deadline for changing a dive sheet is Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 4 p.m. Changes are to be e-mailed only once to or faxed to 678-395-4475.

F. The Meet Director for the State Diving Meet will have jurisdiction over the method of announcing the diving.

G. If possible, the championship venue(s) shall provide two (2) hours of practice time to State Meet participants the week of the State Meet.

H. Boys will dive first in the odd-numbered years (2009, 2011), and girls will dive first in the even-numbered years (2010, 2012).
