JOB TITLE:Support Worker

PURPOSE OF JOB:To provide a comprehensive and holistic service designed to engage with young people around difficult and traumatic experiences such as domestic abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual exploitation, mental health and neglect.

The project will provide medium term accommodation and support to 8 young people aged between 16 and 21 with a view to assisting those individuals to access sustainable longer term, more independent accommodation.

The project holds the principles of attachment, non-exclusion and restorative practice at the core of its work

STARTING SALARY:18,966

HOURS: 37.5 hrs.

Objectives

  • To ensure that the young people supported by the project receive the best possible service at all times.
  • To ensure that young people who use the project receive quality support, advocacy and access to counselling to enable them to develop the skills needed to live independently.
  • To help develop a co-operative relationship with all other relevant agencies and providers to maximise the potential benefit to young people using the project.
  • To contribute to the formation of SYSHP and project operational policy and practice and to share knowledge gained.

Key Activities

  1. To create a safe, nurturing and enabling environment, assisting young people, facing many challenges, to develop the skills needed to secure appropriate move on options within an appropriate time frame for them.
  1. To promote inclusion by working in partnership with others involved in the young person’s support, to engage creatively in the project’s referral process and to translate the needs assessment into support plans which are outcome focussed.
  1. To work with young people with complex difficulties and their presenting needs and to provide them with flexible and responsive support. This includes working with them to identify goals and ways for them to achieve self-esteem, wellness, independence, individual needs, aspirations and inclusion.
  1. To work with young people, who are facing significant challenges and barriers to securing a stable place to live and to tackle the root causes of issues affecting their lives. This will require using a variety of tools which may include motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and restorative approaches on an individual and group work basis.
  1. To work with young people to enable them to develop for themselves a crisis plan to maintain some degree of control over their lives.
  1. To encourage young people to develop and engage in a range of meaningful, interesting and constructive activities, in compliance with risk management requirements internally or externally. These activities will be relevant to individual support plan aims that will include effective use of time and development of confidence and skills.
  1. To work directly with young people within the project, offering support and informal counselling, using the widest range of individual and group work methods.
  1. To work collaboratively with outside agencies offering individual specialist support to young people.
  1. To undertake direct keyworker responsibilities in relation to specific designated young people in accordance with the project’s established policy and practice on key working in relation to the supported accommodation element of the project.
  1. To maintain accurate records and collection of information for monitoring and evaluating effectiveness and quality of service.
  1. To engage in the monitoring, reviewing and evaluation of the work with colleagues and young people.
  1. To participate actively in team meetings and all other forums aimed at developing policy and practice within SYSHP.
  1. To participate actively in supervision sessions with the relevant Coordinator.
  1. To uphold the values, principles and policies of SYSHP and to operate at all times within the agency’s relevant policy guidelines.
  1. To undertake any other duties which are commensurate with the post.

In carrying out the above activities, the worker will seek to promote the aims and

values of SYSHP, will show a commitment to anti oppressive working and anti

discriminatory practices and will operate within SYSHP’s policy guidelines. The

above Job Description will be reviewed on an annual basis and may change as

necessary with prior negotiation.

The Postholder should regard this Job Description with a degree of flexibility as the

range of duties is not exhaustive and may also change to meet the needs of SYSHP.

Career Experience
At least two years’ experience in the field of working with young people affected by issues of homelessness, substance misuse, poor mental health, abuse, / Direct experience of supporting homeless young people and in working closely with agencies that provide counselling or therapeutic support to young people.
Previous training in the field of Homelessness / Housing / Counselling / Domestic Violence / Trauma, etc / 1 & 2

Knowledge of housing, drug and alcohol and social work services as they relate to young homeless people.
Knowledge of the structured forms of support which may be deployed in supported accommodation projects for young people, i.e. key working, reviewing, etc.

Ability to perform fully as part of a team.
Commitment to high personal work standards. / Highly developed range of personal communication skills.
