ELAGSEKRI1: With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
ELAGSEKL1f: Produce and expand complete sentences in shared language activities.

Activator/
Vocabulary / “Raise your hand if you know the season of the year that will begin soon.” The teacher will call on a student and will prompt by giving clues about winter if they don’t respond correctly. “What happens to the temperature during the winter time?” “What do some animals do during the winter time?” If students do not respond with “hibernate” the teacher will give them clues about hibernation. We will discuss what “hibernate” means: To go into a long deep sleep.
Today we are going to read an informational story (non-fiction) about an animal that has to work to get ready for cold weather.
Work Session / 1) The teacher will read the story Ready for Cold Weather to the students. This article focuses on a hedgehog. The teacher will have pictures displayed of hedgehogs for the students. While reading, the teacher will point out specific details about hibernation and other behaviors that hedgehogs exhibit while preparing for cold weather. The teacher will use the RATA strategy during the reading of this story.
2) After listening to the story, the students will work on the “R.A.” of the RACE strategy. We will complete this as a class. The teacher will explain to the students that when answering a question it is important to state your answer in a complete sentence by restating the question. We will discuss what the criteria for a complete sentence is. The teacher will then ask “What happens to hedgehogs during their long winter sleep?” reminding the students to answer in a complete sentence.
3) The teacher will restate the question by writing on chart paper “During their long winter sleep hedgehogs….” The teacher will call on various students and record the responses onto chart paper. If the student does not produce a complete sentence, the teacher will prompt them so that they develop a complete sentence.
Closing / Finally, the students will go back to their seats and use a premade sheet with a sentence starter to record one complete thought to restate the question “What happens to hedgehogs during their long winter sleep?” . The sentence starter will say “During their long winter sleep hedgehogs ______.” The student will also be able to illustrate their sentence.
