SWAC of the Year Award
2012-2013
This contest is to recognize the Student Wellness Advisory Council Chapter that has shown enthusiasm as well as the desire to participate in as many activities as possible. These activities are to benefit the SWAC program, as well as the Food and Nutrition Service Department as a whole.
Background
Student Wellness Advisory Councils (SWAC) formally Nutrition Advisory Councils (NAC) were formed in 1973 based on the idea that students should have an active role in their school meal programs. A Student Wellness Advisory Council, or SWAC, is a student organization, or club, that provides advice for nutritional programs and peers.
This award will recognize the contributions of chapter members who have gone above and beyond in benefiting the SWAC program and Food and Nutrition Services Department.
Who May Apply
All affiliated SWAC chapters of the Florida School Nutrition Association, who have paid in full the Charter fee, may apply for the SWAC of the Year contest, based on accomplishments within the current year.
Even if you have submitted an award in the past, do not start until you have read the Who May Apply and Selection Procedure.
Selection Procedure
The application and documentation must be postmarked on or before February 1stof each year and sent to the FSNA office: 124 Salem Drive, Tallahassee, FL32301.This will be judged by the Nutrition Chair and Nutrition committee, on a selected date by the FSNA Scholarships and Awards Chair at the FSNA office in Tallahassee. Be sure to include all events to the end of your SWAC Charter, including activities planned to be held after the February 1st deadline. All documentation must be neatly bound in a 1” 3 ring notebook, one-sided on 8 ½” x 11” white papers, with the completed entry form serving as the cover page for all documentation. Only 10 Pictures will be accepted. Points will be given for each task accomplished. The chapter with the highest score will be the winner. No Booklets, CD’s, DVD’s or VHS tapes will be accepted.
Recognition
The winning Student Wellness Advisory Council will receive recognition and a matted, framed certificate at the FSNA Annual State Conference. They will also receive recognition in the School Food in Florida publication. The winner of the SWAC of the Year Award will be exempt fromthe Charter fee for the following school year.

Please include an essay (maximum 1000 words including documentation) describing all activities your chapter completed and plans to complete this Charter year. Be sure to explain why your chapter deserves to win the SWAC of the Year contest. You may include any documentation, only 10 pictures. Of your accomplishments, but the essay is the most important part of your award application. Refer to Essay Criteria/Judging sheet page four (4). You may use additional sheets of 8 ½”x11” white paper if needed.
Essay Criteria/Judging Sheet
1. The essay should explain what projects the SWAC worked on throughout the year. It should also explain how the projects were implemented. The judges will be looking for the level of creativity the students used with their projects.
2. The essay should describe how the SWAC involved their fellow students as well as their community. The essay should also state how the fellow students and community responded.
3. The essay should explain the Nutrition and Wellness message(s) the SWAC conveyed throughout the year. How SWAC chose to conveythe message should also be included.
4. The essay should describe the impact the SWAC had that year. This may include the impact made in school, the community, on food presentation, the students, etc.
5. The essay should explain what the members of SWAC learned throughout the year. The essay should reflect on all the experiences the SWAC had and explain the lessons learned through those experiences.
The essay should conclude with why the SWAC deserves to win “The SWAC of the Year” contest.
Each contest essay will be judged on five areas.
