Course Description:

In order to nurture the development of the individual as a participating citizen in a local, state, national, and global community, acquiring another language incorporates communication skills. Students develop these communication skills by using knowledge of the language, including grammar, culture, communication and learning strategies, technology, and content from other subject areas to socialize, to acquire and provide information, to express feelings and opinions, and to get others to adopt a course of action. Through the learning of languages other than English (LOTE), students obtain the tools and develop the context needed to connect with other subject areas. Students also use the language to acquire information and knowledge of other cultures, make connections to other disciplines, make comparisons between languages and cultures (with expanded insight into their own language and culture), and involve themselves in valid community interaction.

Students of languages other than English (LOTE) gain the knowledge to understand cultural practices (what people do) and products (what people create) and to increase their understanding of other cultures as well as to interact with members of those cultures. Students enhance their personal and public lives and meet the career demands of the 21st century by using languages other than English (LOTE) to participate in communities in Texas, in other states, and around the world.

The purpose of this course is to continue Spanish language skills and acquisition in areas of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The topics and skills developed and discussed in this course will include various tenses of verb conjugation, conversation development in familiar topics, cultural celebrations, history, art and people, strengthening of writing skills, among with listening, reading and speaking, and continued vocabulary development.

We will be speaking mostly in Spanish. It is with great joy that I welcome you to Spanish II. I believe in immersion-style teaching, and therefore intend to speak as much Spanish as possible during class. I will make every attempt to ensure that you understand me. Do not hesitate to raise your hand and ask me a question.
