Introduction

The Directorate of Humanities and Science provide a service to a large number of students studying on a range courses in the 2 diverse curriculum areas. Staff and students have access to some of the best FE college facilities in the country. Specialist classroom accommodation includes well-resourced workshops, laboratories and specialist teaching classrooms, and new Learning Resource facilities with state of the art IT areas.

The Directorate is managed by a Head Of Faculty, Department Director and 7 Departmental Managers who look after different areas of the directorate and the work of over 50 teaching staff.

The college is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic, flexible 0.5 FTE Lecturer of Physics/Maths. The post will be based at Matthew Boulton College though possibly also teaching on other campuses that the college has in its estate. The successful candidate will be required to teach on Level 1-3 BTEC Applied Science Courses, Access to HE Science courses and potentially science based units within other directorates. There is also the availability for A-Level teaching if the correct skills and experience are present.

You will need the drive to bring professionalism and enthusiasm to the range of courses offered. A flexible attitude towards teaching in the department and an appetite for involvement in developmental work is essential. Duties

The duties of the lecturer are to be performed in an effective and conscientious manner and these duties will include, but not be limited to, scheduled class contact and tutorials, student assessments and marking to strict internal and awarding body deadlines, constructing learning programmes, curriculum development, educational guidance and counselling, attendance at parent evenings, preparation of learning materials and student assignments, organisation and supervision of student visit programmes, marketing courses and any other ancillary duties. You will also be expected to under-take professional training in support of your college duties, and cover when necessary for absent colleagues.

The major requirement of the Corporation is that the class contact and ancillary duty be responsive to the operational needs of the college. These operational needs will be discussed with you and the hours and ancillary duty time programmed ahead with reasonable notice.

The Corporation recognises that the completion of your annual contract requires a high degree of professional commitment to the needs of the students and the college, and that the full completion of your contract will require work outside the contracted hours at the college.

Job Specification

1.  Teach 875 hours per annum

2.  Teach/assess learners across a range of courses at different levels and if necessary, service other departments within the college

3.  Undertake personal tutorial responsibilities for appropriate group/s of students.

4.  Actively monitor student attendance and progress and conduct student assessment and reviews

5.  Devise, set and mark both internal and external projects/assignments and examination papers where appropriate

6.  Take an active role in curriculum development and innovation by contributing to shared centralised banks of teaching & learning materials, assignments and schemes of work etc.

7.  Be a proactive member of the course team and assist in the evaluation of teaching and learning materials and strategies and take on the role of course coordinator as required

8.  Undertake internal verification and provide relevant information for moderation and revalidation purposes as required

9.  Complete registers, reports and other statistical information as required for departmental or College administrative purposes

10. Contribute to the advice and guidance and assessment of prospective learners, e.g. student interviews and open days

11. Contribute to course marketing activities.

12. Undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required of you, commensurate with your grade.

Person Specification

It is expected that candidates will:

1.  Have a degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject and a teaching qualification

2.  Hold, or be working towards, Qualified Teacher Status

3.  Have experience of teaching Science in a post 16 institution

4.  Able to communicate effectively with both learners and colleagues

5.  Have some knowledge and understanding of current trends in Further Education

6.  Experience and/or knowledge of Functional skills

7.  Possess good administrative and organisational skills and be able to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, employers and prospective students.

8.  Possess the ability to generate enthusiasm and commitment in students
