Sustaining the NHS in Scarborough and Ryedale – Public Meetings

Summary Report

NHS Scarborough and Ryedale Clinical Commissioning Group shared details of the difficulties facing the local health economy recently with local residents at open meetings held in Malton and Scarborough.

The meeting held in Malton, 8 November 2017 had 44 members of the public in attendance. The Scarborough meeting held 15 November 2017 had 23 members attend.

The aim of the events was to present a number of options NHS SRCCG are considering to help address the financial position and with the use of the voting pads to have an interactive session throughout the meeting to gain feedback on the information shared.

The key topics of discussion:

  • Travelling for a hospital appointment or operation?
  • Reducing the prescribing of “Over the counter medicines”
  • Lifestyle choices – would imposing more Clinical Thresholds be acceptable?

Highlights of feedback

In summary the feedback received from attendees at both meetings was very consistent. From the information shared throughout the evening the higher majority of members advised that they would be prepared to travel further for hospital appointments and would support the CCG to move services, where there is evidence that maintains or improves quality and improves outcomes for patients.

In Ryedale 66% of attendees agreed to accept more clinical thresholds, which could delay non urgent treatment for some patients, in Scarborough 53% agreed.

When asked what is most important, the quality of care received came out the highest at both meetings. (Ryedale 86% / Scarborough 63%)

Shorter waiting times is the next importance to Scarborough attendees (Scarborough 21% / Ryedale 3%)

Access to services locallyRyedale 11% / Scarborough 16%.

From the information that was presented to attendees, when asked to rank each area of potential cost saving in order of priority the results show reducing prescribing over the counter medicines as the most important.
