Church Relations, Gustavus Adolphus College Questions: 507-933-7001

The Side-by-Side Development Of Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism: From Jesus to 500 AD/CE

Join us at Gustavus Adolphus College in October for another in-depth mini-course series!

At the time of Jesus, a diverse Judaism, made up of several different religious parties, was held together by rituals performed at the Temple. At first, the followers of Jesus were one of those parties, but after the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD they developed their own religion: Christianity. They worked out patterns of worship, adopted a Christian Bible, and developed their creeds and basic doctrines. By 500 this had been accomplished. At first, the Pharisees were one of those parties, but after the Temple was destroyed, their followers developed a new version of Judaism. They worked out patterns of worship, adopted a Jewish Bible, and developed their own set of teachings. By 500 this has been accomplished. This course will examine the

side-by-side development of these two religions. Though each worked out its own identity, there was also a good deal of interaction. An overview of this first 500 years will help us understand more fully both Christianity and post-biblical Judaism.

The course will be taught on fourconsecutive Monday evenings.
