Research

The Protist Kingdom is made up of a variety of unicellular organisms, which are sometimes referred to as protozoans or algae. Some of these one-celled organisms are capable of making their own food by photosynthesis. Others have developed methods of ingesting food by means of specialized organelles. (Some protists make their own food and eat other food.) Protists have a variety of appearances and methods of locomotion.

Amoeba and other members of the class Sarcodina will be found crawling on the substrate. You will need to Pipet from the bottom to obtain them. They move/blob along using pseudopods.

Paramecium will be found in the highest concentration near the outer edge of the surface and form a cloudy ring at the periphery of the culture vessel. Paramecium is a ciliate protozoan. Unlike amoeba, paramecium has a distinct and permanent shape and certain areas of cytoplasm, (cell organelles), are specialized to carry out specific functions.

Euglena will be found swimming freely using their flagellum throughout the media. They will concentrate near light sources. They are both autotrophic and heterotrophic.

Stentor are usually found attached to debris or the substrate. Pipet from the bottom or sides. Stentor use cilia to sweep food down into its gullet.

A Volvox colony is comprised of many single, bi-flagellated cells connected together by protoplasmic strands. It forms a hollow, green sphere. Individual cells have a red eyespot and, with chloroplasts, can make food from sunlight. Daughter colonies grow within this main colony and eventually break free and develop as a parent colony.

Chilomonas are flagellates that have two flagellum of unequal length. Like euglena they will be swimming freely in the culture.

Hypothesis : I think … ______

Experiment: Find each of the above protists and draw them in the circles. Make sure that you observe them on high power and provide as many details as you can to your sketch. Label the structures that the protist uses to move, cilia, flagella, or pseudopods.
