POSITION TITLE: Youth and Family Caseworker

Position Status: Permanent

Location: 16 King Street Campbelltown NSW 2560

Pay Level: Pay Level: Social Community, Home Care and Disability

Services Industry Award 2010

SCHADS Level 3 or 4 depending on qualifications and experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB PURPOSE:

Provide case work and group work to the most vulnerable people aged 12 to 18 years and their families using a strengths based model. A holistic approach is to be taken in providing and supporting young people to improve their relationships with their parents while assisting the young people to reach their goals and full potential.

Support young people and their families to gain access to appropriate services and to build relationships within the community.

Support young people’s engagement in educational and vocational pursuits.

Services may be provided within the family home, centre based, within group situations or any other venues within the community.

They will maintain professional development in relation to identified best practices, understanding and apply reporting requirements including Mandatory Reporting and other legislative requirements; being aware of program, policy and service changes.

They will ensure that all reporting and case files (paper based and electronic) are of the highest quality standard, and data is protected to ensure client’s information is private and confidential.

The Caseworker will deliver services in accordance with organisational policies, procedures and Code of Conduct; relevant legislative frameworks; and in accordance with conditions identified in funding agreements.

POSITION IN ORGANISATION:

Youth and Family Caseworker reports directly to the Team Leader.

Support and direction may at times be provided by other Team Leaders and the Director.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

The Youth Worker will be responsible for the day to day provision of support to youth.

DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide support to youth and their families to develop skills that will assist them to:

·  Deal with immediate crisis

·  Meet the demands of early adult life

·  Encourage youth to determine and achieve their goals

·  Strengthen relationships with family

·  Provide links to appropriate support services

·  Contribute to their communities

Use casework strategies to:

·  Engage, empathise and develop professional relationships with youth and their families

·  Identify, manage and reduce child protection concerns

·  Use empathetic listening and problem solving skills to identify the needs and develop suitable plans of support

·  Make referrals to other supports and services to meet the needs of youth and their families

Use group work strategies to:

·  Provide non-judgmental support to youth and their families in a variety of group work and information sessions

·  To research, develop, deliver and review education and information groups

·  To provide support to youth that will encourage confidence and self-determination

·  Keep appropriate records and collect statistics for reporting processes

·  Carry out any administrative tasks e.g. case file management, data collection, etc. for the effective maintaining of work with young people and their families

·  Cooperate with the Team Leader and other team members in assessment, planning and reviewing processes

·  Attend monthly supervision and case review reporting on activities and working towards personal and professional development

·  Participate in organisation planning and evaluation processes as required

·  Participate as part of the service network, developing and maintaining links with other services, government agencies and schools, in order to enhance collaboration and avoid duplication

·  Comply with statutory provisions and work according to the policies and procedures for service provision endorsed by the Board of Campbelltown Family Support Service

·  Other activities as directed by the Team Leader and / or Director

Specific Functions:

Support youth and their family in their own home, community centre or in group situations. Work with youth to achieve their goals in areas such as but not limited to:

·  Working toward preventing homelessness and or family breakdown

·  Risk taking reduction strategies

·  Improve the understanding of parents on challenges that teenage development brings

·  Financial management

·  Improved self esteem

·  Coping strategies

·  Better understanding of education and employment opportunities

·  Alleviation of social isolation and improving community networking

·  Increased knowledge and management of health issues

·  Enhanced communication skills

·  Assist the youth to recognise areas of their life that may require other forms of assistance

·  Support the youth to access specialist services as required

·  Problem solving skills

·  Advocate for youth to achieve goals and improve outcomes

SELECTION CRITERIA:

1.  Qualification in Social Work, Youth Work, Social Sciences, Community Welfare or similar

2.  Demonstrated experience in providing case management for disadvantaged young people and their families

3.  Experience in working with young people with multiple, complex needs including child protection concerns

4.  Demonstrated experience working with youth with substance misuse, homelessness, and mental health.

5.  Demonstrated experience engaging youth with community, education and vocation.

6.  Demonstrated experience and/or skills in conflict resolution, problem solving and mediation

7.  Experience in facilitating group work programs for young people and their parents

8.  Competence in use of keyboard and standard PC software including excel

9.  Current full drivers licence and access to a vehicle with comprehensive insurance

10.  NSW Working with Children Check Clearance Criminal Record Check

The post is subject to a probationary period of 6 months during which your performance will be reviewed. During this probationary period, either party may terminate the contract by giving the appropriate notice.
