Support for Improving Professional Practice

COUNTY: / Wayne County / SUBMITTED BY: / Lynn Hurt, Superintendent
What data did you analyze to determine district professional development, trainings and support?
Wayne County Curriculum Team analyzed the following data to determine professional development needs, trainings and support for our beginning and experienced teachers: attrition, retention, and expected number of new teachers for the 2013-14 school year. Over the past three years we have had approximately retirements at the classroom and school level. Teachers who have left our county have done so due to relocation for a spouses's job. Upon examination of our retention rate, we have retained all of the new teachers and administrators that we have hired with one exception.
We expect no new administrators during the 2013-14 school year. We do expect to hire 20 new teachers for the 2013-14 school year which is down from the 29 we had new for the 2012-13 school year and down from the 42 in 2011-12. Student teachers who complete their pre-service requirements in Wayne County are considered for jobs in Wayne County, prior to looking at others.
Identify strengths and weaknesses as determined by the educator evaluation system and explain how these findings guided your professional development plan.
The mentoring program has not been successful for our beginning teachers. For example, in the 2013-14 school year, we had six new teachers at one school and no mentor teachers were employed there. This is a small school so we had to "bring" a mentor from another school for these beginning teachers on a weekly basis and she mentored all six of them. We feel that the model we have developed (based on Cabell County's model) will provide the necessary support for these teachers. Assigning academic coachs who can provide the time needed to the beginning teachers will alleviate this problem. Looking at educator evaluation, classroom management continues to a need for our beginning teachers. With the inception of Next Generation Common Core Standards, our new teachers need to be actively involved in Professonal Development that the county will offer to all teachers. Beginning teachers also will be included in educator evaluation training at the school level at the beginning of the school year.
