Reading and Approval of MinutesSusan Hansen

The October Meeting Minutes were approved with no changes.

Principal’s ReportMandy Dorey

Paula Jones reported that the ISD has installed new gates on both sides of the school. They are not locked.

Teacher’s ReportMarie Blakley

  • Teachers can now keep their doors locked. They have a foam piece on the door so it doesn’t fully close unless it’s pulled shut.
  • We had a lockdown drill and most teachers have done their safety training with the new power point.
  • Regarding the auction, Marie reported that the second grade will bump up the number for their dinner instead of doing teacher of the day. The teachers are concerned about having to pay $75 for their spouse’s ticket, and they are a bit concerned about the $25 ticket price teacher’s ticket price, especially given how much they donate each to put on their special experience. Some spend as much as $100/teacher out of their own pockets.

Financial ReportPatty Thieme

  • Patty presented the financial reports which are attached to these minutes.
  • Corporate sponsorship money for the auction is already coming in.
  • We also still have membership coming in. We are doing a big membership push with room moms.
  • We got $713 from STB Direct (school supplies).
  • The Sounders night brought in a couple hundred dollars.
  • All school and teacher grants have gone through. We paid our liability insurance this month. We have used just about the entire Raise the Paddle money from the last auction.

Presidents’ Report Risa Garrett/Dee Reiff

  • Our school improvement goal is in math, so it would be nice to do a Raise the Paddle at the Auction focusing on that. It might also be nice to have workshops or trainings that expose the kids to practical applications and potential careers involving math. Paula Jones is beginning to look at this.
  • IXL is a PTA program we pay for. We are thinking about doing an Eager Reader style program for IXL. We want to encourage more use of this math learning resource.

Committee Reports:

Communications Leslie Pittman/Melissa Stefani

  • Student directory --Millie Crithfield agreed to do the directory and train Tammy Richards.
  • Kim Clarke and Leslie Pittman will go to the PTA Facebook training. We might create PTA/Auction Facebook pages.
  • Helen Ting wants us to decide on the cost for the yearbook this year. It cost $16 last year, but Dorian’s price has gone up a lot over the past years. They charge us around $14.75 /book, up $1.23 the last two years. We tabled the discussion for later.
  • They did a Caring is Contagious bulletin board.
  • Randi sent out new eSplash guidelines.

Curriculum Enrichment Becky Foster/Becca Bishop

  • The number of Reflections submissions is significantly less. The number has been dropping for the past three years. We only got 43 submissions this year, down from 72 last year, which was already down from prior years. They gave an extension, but only got three more entries. Jenny feels paper flyers would help because it happens early in the year. We discussed ways to increase participation, possibly using the art docent program, paper flyers, etc.
  • Science Fair preplanning has started. There is a statewide competitive science fair that we’ve never participated in. If kids wanted to do that, we would need a couple of extra judges.

Fundraising Jennifer Keilin/Kris Pottsmith

  • We raised a little money with the Sounders night.
  • Box Tops will earn us approximately $700. Tiffany Endres submitted 1500 labels for education points. We are now able to redeem points for Visa gift cards. We have enough points for $750 in gift cards.
  • Membership: We are at 79%, 443 out of 560. We are doing a room parent push this month to target specific parents who haven’t joined. We will publish a thank you for joining list early in December.
  • Logo wear closed Friday.

Hospitality Leslie Gilbert/Kristin Bendt

  • Cheryl Gilbert has agreed to chair Staff Appreciation Week. We are looking for a co-chair.
  • We will send a card and Glassybaby to family in 3rd grade that had a parent pass away. We will also send cards to Linda Okamoto and Marie Bean because their moms had strokes.
  • We collected 625 lbs. of candy for Operation Gratitude. There 48 boxes and some cards made by the kids.

Jen will chair Caring Through Sharing which starts on November 27th.

Parent Education Victoria Fritch

  • Julie Metzger was here last week. Not a great turnout. Although we advertised in other PTA’s newsletters too, only around 12 people showed up.
  • Cougar Ridge has a parent ed next Thursday from 7:30 – 8:30. There will be a presentation by Anne Livingston on online safety.

Legislative Rep Kim Clarke

  • Kim went to the legislative assembly in Vancouver, WA a few weeks ago. Members can submit issues to the WA State PTA to establish their top five priorities. The top five they decided on were : (1) Funding McLeary (funding basic education), (2) creating positive social climates through social/emotional learning, (3) increase capital funding – build more schools, (4) increased access to higher education, and (5) Breakfast after the Bell.
  • Kim learned from legislators that individuals with individual stories need to communicate with their legislators. It has a big impact.
  • Focus Day is on January 19, 2015 in Olympia.

ISF Kim Clarke

This Thursdayfrom 9-1there is the Holiday Shopping Bazaar at Blakely Hall in the Highlands. It is a fundraiser.

Old Business

  • Vote: Teacher Grants (Nicole Brookens). Our attempts to find a mini-projector and document camera for free were unsuccessful, so we will now vote on Nicole Brookens grant request.

MOTION #1: Victoria Fritch moved that we approve $717.78 for a mini-projector and a document camera for Nicole Brookens in the Resource Room. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

New Business

  • Spooky Wrap Up – Tom Victory

Tom thanked the PTA for the opportunity to put on Spooky Spaghetti night for the past nine years. He also reported that he, Jen Newell, Allison May, Mikel Rogers are stepping down. However, Jason Houck, Jeff Biesold and two potential “Maries” are stepping up to take over the event. This year Spooky had approximately $4600 in income and $3000 in expenditures. Tom stressed that we have gotten a lot from donations actively sought by the chairs, and we might not get those in the future. For example, Jeff Biesold donated pasta, sauce and cheese every year (worth approximately $500). Mikel Rogers donates the salad ($100). Jen Newell got all of the cookies donated by Matthews. (Please remember to thank Steve, Matthews manager. Risa will bring Tom some PTA thank you cards to send.)Milk has been donated ($87). We did not have to pay $400 for the DJ, but we will have to pay in the future. Next year, therefore, we will probably break even or even be in the hole a bit.
