Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, an academic teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, is offering a one year fellowship position in Stroke Neurology (with the option to extend to 2 years).
Sunnybrook is a regional stroke centre serving a population of >1 million people in the North and East Greater Toronto area. In addition to a busy inpatient stroke service and outpatient clinics, Sunnybrook is a founding partner of the Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery (CSR) at the University of Toronto. This is a virtual centre which includes Ottawa University, Baycrest and Sunnybrook.
Sunnybrook has a multidisciplinary stroke program with strong collaboration from neuroradiology, vascular neurosurgery and neurocritical care. Our centre has a bi-plane neurointerventional angiography suite, two 1.5T and one 3.0T clinical MRI scanners (as well as additional dedicated research scanners), 4 CT scanners and PET-CT. We have a dedicated NeuroDoppler ultrasound laboratory which is the only Intersocietal Accreditation Commission Vascular Accreditation (ICAVL) accredited laboratory in Toronto for both carotid US and transcranial Doppler US. We have an active research program and participate in a number of high profile clinical trials in both acute stroke management and stroke prevention. Sunnybrook also houses the Sunnybrook Research Institute and has expertise in clinical epidemiology and stroke health services research.
Our team consists of 5 dedicated stroke neurologists (Drs. Julia Hopyan, David Gladstone, Mark Boulos, Amy Yu and Rick Swartz), 3 vascular neurosurgeons, 1 interventional neuroradiologist, and 6 additional neuroradiologists. We also have 3 full time clinical nurse specialists, as well as a comprehensive multidisciplinary allied health team of experts on the stroke unit (including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, dietician and neuropsychologist). Sunnybrook has a Regional Stroke Team (consisting of OT, PT, SLP) and a dedicated driving clinic to help manage outpatient stroke rehabilitation/reintegration.
The stroke fellow’s clinical responsibilities will include participation in both inpatient stroke care (helping to manage patients in the 12 bed stroke unit, attending to stroke consults both in the hospital and in the emergency department, running code strokes), and outpatient stroke care (attend both the Rapid TIA/Stroke as well as the Regional Stroke Prevention Clinics, including subspecialty clinics such as Stroke and Pregnancy and also the Vasculitis Clinic). There are numerous educational opportunities, including Stroke Imaging Rounds, Stroke Journal Club, and Stroke Seminar Series. The stroke fellow will also participate in the afterhours call schedule. A stroke fellow at Sunnybrook will be exposed to a high volume of interesting stroke cases as the hospital receives >700 code stroke patients per year, including approximately 140 tPA administrations and 50-60 endovascular thrombectomy cases per year.
Applicants should have completed an accredited training program in Neurology or Internal Medicine in preparation for a start date in July.
