Sun Fire[tm] V20z Server with AMD Opteron 252 Processor
Option of Solaris[tm] 10 OS, Sun Java[tm] Enterprise System Preinstalled

The Sun FireTM V20z server's new standard configuration offers AMD Opteron 252 or 2.6 GHz processors and supports the fastest 400 MHz Double Data Rate (DDR) memory that is available for AMD Opteron processors. With these enhancements, the Sun Fire V20z can assist enterprises solve complex technical problems even faster then before, reducing time-to-market for their products and services.

This new standard configuration improves the response time for Web Services, EDA applications, horizontally-scaled databases or other similar applications. In addition, customers can select an XATO configuration with the AMD Opteron 252 processors that enable configuration flexibility.

This entry-level server offers the SolarisTM 10 Operating System (Solaris OS) for x64 with the Sun JavaTM Enterprise System preinstalled. Its ready-for-deployment configuration accelerates time-to-deployment and time-to-market for new Web Services. In addition, it is multiplatform supported to meet varying customers' IT environments, from UNIXR and Linux applications to Microsoft Windows.

The Sun Fire V20z server's network throughput, security and manageability help maximize the number of concurrent sessions that can be supported securely. This is achieved through support of up to 10 networking connections that maximize network throughput, built-in virus protection capabilities and secure remote management. Both the new DDR1/400 memory and the previous DDR1/333 memory are supported on the Sun Fire V20z with AMD Opteron 252, however there are restrictions on memory layout for these 252-based systems. These restrictions include:

  • Systems support either DDR1/333 or DDR1/400, but not mixed simultaneously in the memory banks.
  • Any combination of DDR1/333 memory is supported up to 8 GB per CPU, translating into a maximum of 16 GB with two CPUs.
  • DDR1/400 memory is supported up to a maximum of 6 GB per CPU translating into a maximum of 12 GB with two CPUs. When used, the 2 GB DIMMs must be place closest to the CPU when mixed with 1 GB or 512 MB DIMMs. A BIOS fix is expected to address this issue.
  • A fully populated system with eight 2 GB DDR1/400 DIMMs is not supported at this time. A BIOS fix is expected to address this issue.

The AMD Opteron 252 is only supported on this new configuration due to a motherboard change that supports an updated Voltage Regulator Module. Therefore, existing install base Sun Fire V20z systems will not support CPU upgrades to the AMD Opteron 252.
