Summer Reading Book Sharing/Report Follow-up Activities

Summer reading will provide you with the opportunity to discover and experience people, places, ideas, and language at your leisure. You can enter wholeheartedly into the life of another person, adult or adolescent, rich or poor, near or distant.

All students are required to select two (2) books from the summer reading list. After reading, they will select two (2) different book sharing/follow-up activities*,one activity for each book. Gifted Students will be presenting the first Friday when we return to school, August 22, 2014. All other students will turn in their assignments the following Friday, August 29, 2014.

Follow-up Activities:

  1. *Symbol: Think of a symbol that stands for the main idea or theme of your book. Explain the connection in a paragraph and design the symbol. MUST BE TYPED.
  2. *Reflections: Select four of the reflections and write one (1) paragraph on each. MUST BE TYPED:

  1. *Cartoon: Create a cartoon of at least 12-15 main events or ideas from the book. Label these events with chapter and scene. Add dialogue where appropriate. MUST BE COLORFUL.
  2. Poster: Make a poster advertising your book so someone else will want to read it.

Posters must be:

  • The size of a full size sheet of construction paper or poster board
  • Posters should not have blank space (use the whole sheet of paper)
  • Illustrated with at least two scenes from the book
  • The title and author must be on the poster

In your advertisement describe why someone should read your book. Be creative!

  1. Book Report: 8th Grade Students Book Report Format (This must be one of the reports for all 8th Grade Students. See the next two pages for further information.)
  2. Interview: interview a character from your book. Write at least 10 - 15 questions that will give the character the opportunity to discuss his/her thoughts and feelings about his/her role in the story and his/her feelings about events in the story. Then pretend you are the character and answer the questions. Questions must be thoughtful and answers must correspond to the characterization of the character in the novel.
  1. Timeline: Make an illustrated timeline showing the important events of the story from the beginning of the book to the end. Each event on the timeline should have a picture and a 1-2 sentence caption explaining what the event is. Remember, timelines are always in chronological order. (10-20 main events should be described on your timeline).

*Gifted students may only select from these activities.

The required format is as follows:

REPORT PAGE(S)

  1. Write the report in three paragraphs. It is understood that each paragraph will contain a topic sentence and at least four additional sentences.

In the first paragraph briefly give the setting and summarize the plot of the book. Make sure you include the title of the book and author.

In the second paragraph tell whether or not the story kept you involved, and why or why not. Be specific in your references to characters, plot ideas, or writing style/language by providing examples from the book.

In the third paragraph answer the question, “What did you learn about people or life from this book?” Again, refer to specific events and characters in the story to explain your thoughts. Find the theme(s) of the book. What did the main character learn and how can you apply this to your life

  1. The report should be typed in 12pt., Times New Roman font, and correctly formatted according to the above directions. Check your spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization.

***If you are unable to access a computer at home, you may neatly handwrite your report.
