SUMMER 2016 6th GRADE HOMEWORK

Welcome incoming 6th graders! We are looking forward to meeting all of you thinkers, readers, and writers of the Columbia Secondary School Class of 2021! Before you begin at CSS, you are required to read at least three books this summer and complete the assignments listed below! Please complete the assignments to follow and BRING YOUR COMPLETED WORK on the first day of Bridge to School, August 31st! The assignments given will not only exercise your brains this summer, but will introduce you to three essential components of the CSS mission:

1.  Read Going Blue: A Teen Guide to Saving our Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, & Wetlands by Cathryn Berger Kaye and Philippe Cousteau (Free Spirit Publishing / EarthEcho International, 2010, ISBN: 978-1-57542-348-7). This book will be handed out by CSS during orientation, so you can start reading right away! Please be sure to take good care of your copy and bring it with you during Bridge to School!

2.  Read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. This text should be available at all bookstores and libraries.Write The Phantom Tollbooth Response:

As you read about the infinite staircase with the partial boy, consider our ideas of infinity and of math as a reflection of the real world. Write two paragraphs (8-10 sentences each) answering the following questions (one paragraph for each question): Is the partial boy a good way to show the idea of the “average family” having 2.5 children? How does your understanding of infinity relate to its representation in the book?

3.  In addition to Going Blue and The Phantom Tollbooth, Choose one or more of the titles listed below to read. Please choose one that you have not already read. If you want to be a total reading rockstar, challenge yourself to read them all! Each of these titles features characters who overcome an obstacle in pursuit of their goals. They challenge us to think deeply of ourselves and our world!

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
