Summary of the Proposed Curriculum Changes

for

Exercise Science and Sport Studies

The following eligibility requirements are proposed for declaring the Exercise Sciencemajor as of the incoming class of 2015. As of the Fall of 2011, the criteria for declaring the major are grades of C or better in each of the following courses:

  1. The Sport Studies Option and the Sport Management Option
  2. 01:377:203 Sport and the Law
  3. 01:377:204 Risk Management in Sport Administration
  4. 01:377:275 Basic Statistics for Exercise Science
  5. The Applied Kinesiology Option, the Exercise Science Option and the Exercise Physiology Option
  6. 01:119:101 General Biology
  7. 01:119:102 General Biology
  8. 01:377:275 Basic Statistics for Exercise Science

These courses may only be retaken once as students strive to become eligible to formally declare the major.

Changes in Exercise Science and Sport Studies Options

  1. The following change is being submitted for approval for each of the 5 options within the Exercise Science and Sport Studies major (4 previous options and the new Sport Studies Option):

01:198:110 has been eliminated from all options as a major requirement

  1. The following changes are being submitted for approval for both the Applied Kinesiology Option and the Exercise Science Option within the Exercise Science and Sport Studies major:

a.Both of these science options no longer require 01:377:303 (Kinesiology), 01:377:324 (Movement Experiences for Individuals with Disabilities) and 01:377:406 (Management in Exercise Science and Sport Studies). These three courses are now electives within these two options within the major.

b.Both the Applied Kinesiology Option and the Exercise Science Optionnow require 01:377:407 (Administration in Exercise Science and Applied Kinesiology, 1.5 cr.).

c.Both the Applied Kinesiology Option and the Exercise Science Option now present students with a choice of a fixed number of required courses from a prescribed cluster of courses. These differ in the number of choices depending upon the specific option and are specified for each option below.

  1. The following changes are being submitted for the Sport Management Option within the Exercise Science and Sport Studies major.

Summary of the changes:

  1. 01:198:110 (Intro Computers and Applications) has been eliminated.
  2. 01:377:355 Professional Presentations in Sport Management replaces 04:192:220 Fundamentals of Public Speaking which is no longer offered. 04:192:380 (Public Speaking) can be used as a substitute although Professional Presentations is preferred.
  3. 01:377:203 (Sport & the Law) was changed from a 300 level to a 200 level course and reduced from 3 cr. to 1.5 cr.
  4. 01:377:204 (Risk Mgt in Sport Admin) was changed from a 300 level to a 200 level course.
  5. The Sport Management Option now requires at least 3 electivecredits at the 300 or 400 level.
  6. The total number of credits for the option was reduced from 73 to 68.5 as a result of the elimination of Intro to Computers Appl (3 cr.less) and the reduced Sport & the Law credits (1.5 cr. less).
  7. 01:377:203 (Sport & the Law) and 01:377:204 (Risk Mgt in Sport Administration) are no longer restricted to majors only to permit non-majors to meet the new requirements to declare the major.
  8. Access to this option requires a 2.85 major GPA in a minimum of 12 credits required for the major.

New Sport Studies Option Requirements:

SPORT STUDIES OPTION

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

NUMBER / COURSE NAME / CREDITS
01:355:101 / Expository Writing / 3
01:355:303 / Writing for Business and the Professions* / 3
01:830:101 / General Psychology / 3

01:377:___ / Sport Management Option Electives
(At least 6 credits must be at the 300 or 400 level and can include mini-courses. Internship credits may be used as elective credits but a 2.5major and overall GPA are required for internship eligibility) / 9
*Courses which require pre- or co-requisites / Total Credits = 34.5

Summary of the changes:

  1. The option is new and entrance to it requires only a grade of C or better in three courses: 01:377:203 (Sport and the Law); 01:377:204 (Risk Mgt in Sport Admin); and 01:377:275 (Basic Statistics for Exercise Science).
  2. 01:377:203 (Sport & the Law) and 01:377:204 (Risk Mgt in Sport Administration) are no longer restricted to majors only to permit non-majors to meet the new requirements to declare the major.
  3. This option permits majors to complete an internship for credit but requires a 2.5 major and overall GPA. Since the internship is now an elective, the higher GPA requirement does not prevent students from graduating but does demand a higher level of academic performance before being granted approval to take the internship.
