Summarizing the Slide Shows (Cold War Begins and Kennedy/Civil Rights Movement)
Instructions: Answer each of these in complete sentence form using the power points in the file folder “Post War America” found on the U.S. History web page. Be sure to review the slide shows before you answer as I am looking for specific information from these to answer the questions. You may work in your project teams to complete this assignment, but I want one paper per team if you do it this way. This will be due by end of class on Friday. This assignment is worth 60 Points so it would help you to do this assignment and turn it in on time!!!!!! THAT POINT TOTAL IS EQUIVALENT TO A TEST GRADE!!!
- What is a “Cold War”? What nation was the U.S.’s rival following World War II? Why were they our rival? What did the Cold War cause in the United States (be specific)? How did the Presidents Truman and Eisenhower deal with the Cold War (what was their policy toward Communism)? How did they demonstrate this policy in their actions with the Cold War crises?
- Explain the Korean War. What caused it? When did it occur? What events made it worse? How did the war end? Do we still see effects from this event today? Explain how we still have to deal with this event.
- What was the second Red Scare? Who was involved and what events show that this was going on in 1950s America?
- What areas became hot spots for the Cold War? Explain what made them hot and tell me which side supported the different groups in these areas.
- What made the Kennedy election historic?
- What was Kennedy’s policy domestically? What was his policy internationally (dealing with the Cold War)? Support your findings with specific events that show his policy trends.
- Give me a summary of events of the Civil Rights movement. What was the movement like before 1954? What events shaped the Civil Rights movement prior to 1954? What landmark court case began the change in the movement in 1954 and what did this court case state? Which leaders emerged after 1954 to lead the movement and what were their tactics to making their voices heard? Give me examples of these tactics. What achievements were made because of this movement (be specific)?
- How did the Civil Rights movement change following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.? What new groups were formed and became popular prior to King being assassinated? How did the message of these groups differ from that of King’s? What other new leaders emerged after this period and what changes did these new movements get made in American Society?
