A Learning Community Liaison (LCL) is a student volunteer who has either (i) successfully completed at least one semester in the FAU Learning Community (LC) Program or (ii) anyone interested in supporting incoming FAU students. The LCLs serve as mentors and/or tutors to students entering the LC program for the 2014-2015 academic year. All LCLs are responsible for developing study groups, presenting workshops, planning Learning Community social programs, as well as supporting any other Center for Learning And Student Success freshman related initiatives.

Such activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attend all LCL training sessions during the Spring 2014 semester.
  • Develop study groups and workshops (in meeting with their assigned LC cohort)
  • Attend all LCL training sessions during the Fall 2014 semester
  • Attend & assist in planning academic support, social, community service, intramural activities and programs for all LC students.
  • Participate in Campus Expo Orientation Sessions (during the summer semesters).
  • Participate and present at Passport to FAU: a first-year student success conference (takes place the Sunday before classes start).
  • Attend and assist in the implementation of the FLC Ice Cream Social (takes place during Weeks of Welcome).
  • Participate in other FAU campus-wide initiatives (including Carnival of Majors, Weeks of Welcome, Homecoming, etc).
  • Participate in an all-day Fall Training session that occurs the week before fall classes start.

In addition, LC Liaisons will be responsible for:

  • Providing support and encouragement to FAU students (by establishing strong rapport with their LC cohort).
  • Assisting students with reading/study skills, writing skills, time management, and adjusting to college life.
  • Forming an important link between students and FAU (achieved through helping students utilize the many resources available on campus).

All Liaisons are required to be committed to the program for at least one year (Fall 2014-Spring 2015).

Reports To: the Coordinator for the Center for Learning And Student Success and Director of Learning Communities.

Qualifications:

•Completed LC Liaison Application (personal information, work experience, and essay responses).

•Be a full-time undergraduate FAU degree-seeking student.

•Demonstrate satisfactory academic performance (minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and 2.5 fall semester GPA).

•Submit the names of two references (one must be your SLS instructor).

•Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

•Maintain a passion and enthusiasm for helping peers succeed at FAU.

Duties and Responsibilities:

•Attend mandatoryspring 2014 training sessions.

•Commit to volunteer a minimum of 2 hours per week during the Fall 2014 semester (LCL meetings with their assigned LC students and attend SLS 1412 every Tuesday 4:00-4:50. Assist SLS 1412 instructor with the preparation for class. Attend LCL meetings every Thursday 4:00-4:50.).

•Help students become familiar with university resources; advise and refer residents to appropriate university offices, as the need arises.

•Be available for formal and informal interaction with students in the LC program.

•Help students with writing skills, reading/study skills, time management, and adjusting to college life.

•Meet individually with students, if needed, and submit a report to the Coordinator for the Center for Learning And Student Success.

•Develop workshops for students participating in the LC program. LCLs will be responsible for providing ice-breakers for each workshop and serving as facilitators.

•Provide support and friendship.

Compensation:

Although all FAU LCLs will be working solely on a volunteer basis, students can earn hours that will be recorded by the FAU Center for Civic Engagement and Service and put on your transcript.

The LCL program is also a 0-credit course that will appear on your transcript for the fall semester. The Center for Learning And Student Success will automatically register you for the class. You will receive a grade for participating in this program as well.
