Students on the advanced pathway are required to take two modules in advanced Spanish language (SPAN105 and SPAN106) and two modules in either Portuguese (PORT112 and PORT134), Catalan (CATL112 and CATL134) or Basque (BASQ112 and BASQ134). They continue the same language in Year 2 and 4. The minor subject (see below) is optional for students on the advanced pathway. If not taking a minor subject, students will take MODL105 and HISP112 instead.

Students take 60 credits of modules in each semester, made up as follows:
A) 3 x 15-credit advanced language modules (AL)
plus 1 x 15-credit complementary module (C)
OR
B) 2 x 15-credit advanced language modules (AL)
1 x 15-credit beginners’ language module (BL)
plus 1 x 15-credit complementary module (C)
OR
C) 1 x 15-credit advanced language module (AL)
2 x 15-credit beginners’ language module (BL)
plus 1 x 15-credit complementary module (C)
Language modules must be taken in pairs across both semesters.
Students must take a complimentary (C) module from a different language area in each semester.
Chinese should normally only be taken alongside two advanced languages (i.e. Chinese cannot be taken concurrently with a second beginners’ language).
Normally only students with an A at A level in their advanced language are eligible to take 2 beginners’ languages (Option C).
HISP120 and HISP121 are complimentary modules for Basque, Catalan and Portuguese, as well as Spanish. However, students cannot take both HISP120 and HISP121.
Basque and Catalan should normally be taken alongside advanced Spanish.
Students may not take more than one of Basque, Catalan and Portuguese.
