SUBJECT:Radiology Physician Assistant - Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of a supervising physician, the Radiology Physician Assistant provides high quality, efficient, team based patient focused care. The Radiology Physician Assistant responsibilities may include managing patients in the Radiology Department, Emergency Department and/or Surgical Services. The Radiology Physician Assistant's daily responsibilities may vary based upon the department & supervising physician needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•Provides health care services to patients under the direction and responsibility of his/her supervising physician.

•Primary Duties will be inclusive of the following but not limited to: Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examination, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination.

•Administers monitors and/or orders diagnostic tests, such as imaging studies including fluoroscopy, lumbar punctures, myelograms, paracentesis, thoracentesis, joint injections, stress test monitoring, and interprets test results for deviations from normal.

•Responsible for patient care decisions and direction as needed in Radiology from staff members. (something to the effect of handling questions and needs from imaging staff about things like contrast allergies or issues to ensure correct imaging care is done).

•Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, and assists in provision of continuity of care.

•Based upon Specific Specialty, additional duties may include the following: Facilitate admissions, transfers, and discharges.

•Round on inpatients.

•Performs admission evaluation on patients to include: obtaining basic medical information and history, reviewing patient's medical record, performing physical exam, documenting findings into patient medical record, and reporting deviations from normal findings to attending physician.

•Provides patient and family with pre-procedure and other pertinent education.

•Reviews patient chart noting allergies, pertinent medical history, and abnormal physical findings.

  • Protects confidentiality of health information according to HIPAA.
  • Maintains all required training and certifications.
  • Notifies supervising physician or other applicable physicians regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Performs related assignments as required including education, wellness promotion and procedure/protocol development.

•Facilitates patient discharge; dictates discharge and transfer summaries in a timely manner.

•Assists Radiologist and Director of Diagnostic Imaging with process improvement and quality goals for continued growth.

•Practices safety, environmental and/or infection control methods.

•Enhances professional growth and development through participating in educational programs, conferences, seminars and current literature as relevant to the practice and in keeping with time constraints.

•Demonstrates a positive attitude and actions through display of courtesy, cooperation, sensitivity and professionalism with medical staff, hospital staff, patients and their families.

•Must have the ability to convey compassion and caring attitude.

•Must exhibit responsiveness to others in the organization at all levels (i.e. returning phone calls, being punctual to meetings, maintaining availability to meet).

•Regularly keeps the Director of Diagnostic Imaging informed of departmental needs and problems.

•Responsible for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships with all staff members

•Demonstrates a professional working knowledge of all radiographic equipment to include PACS, Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and computer systems.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Skills:

Ability to provide professional care based on training, competence and judgment.

Must have full capacity to read, write and comprehend as well as full capacity to make complex and routine medical judgments.

Must have contemporary skills and documented CME.

Working knowledge of medical terminology as it relates to radiology

Education: Graduate from an ARC-PA accredited physician assistant program.

  • Experience:

Three (3) years previous experience in the last five (5) years as a physician assistant.

  • Licenses needed:

Idaho State Physician Assistant License, issued by Idaho Board of Medicine.

BLS certification required.

  • Supervisory: None
  • Supervised by: Director of Diagnostic Imaging
