Essential understanding

This unit is an introduction to the Hospitality and Tourism industry. The course will address the needs of the students to develop successful and meaningful life skills in order to plan their career. The content will provide an introduction to various components of the hospitality and tourism industry. Students will receive an overview of the careers that encompass the management, marketing and operations of restaurants and other food services, lodging, attractions, recreation events and travel related services in hospitality and tourism.

Overview

Hospitality and Tourism involves all aspects of the travel, leisure, foods, and lodging industries.

This class will focus on those four industries separately. Travel involves airplane, cruise ship, and train travel. Leisure is all forms of recreation including amusement parks, sports arenas, and other attractions. Restaurants and food service are in the foods industry. Lodging includes hotels and resorts for overnight stay. Students will explore such concepts such as creating a theme park, designing their own hotel; understanding the tourism industry, creating a travel itinerary, practicing good work habits. They will also gain an understanding of the restaurant industry through cooking, creating/designing their own restaurant and catering a meal.

This course will involve a lot of different teaching styles. I will use lectures, power point lectures, group work, Internet research, individual work, and others. There will be projects and field trips as well.

Group work Choose one from the following. Due Friday 2/19

_____ 1. In small groups, develop a list of other career specialties that would have gone into making the travel brochure. Then, develop a list of questions that could be asked at an interview to determine the education and training needed in relation to a career in the hospitality and tourism industry.

______2. Advertising the Perfect Hotel; brainstorm ideas about your hotel, discuss the questions on the handout provided to you and then answer them. From the information on the handout, you will draw an ad for your hotel, listing all the wonderful things to do there. Don't forget to include your answers for rooms, activities, and people. In addition, describe how the people add to their perfect hotel. Present your hotel to the class and display your drawings and handouts.

Individual work- First week- Due Friday 2/5

______1. Imagine that you are the head of the Chamber of Commerce in your chosen location.

Your task is to develop an eye-catching travel brochure to convince people to visit your location. Be sure to describe not only the location the visitors will see, but also the transportation they will

take and their accommodations while visiting, attractions, dinning, cultural etiquette (if appropriate) and temperature.

______2. “Let’s look closely at travel and lodging. We know what travel is. Lodging is where you stay on your travels. How many of you have been on a vacation? Where did you stay?” Have you ever thought about what would be the perfect place to stay? What would be the perfect family hotel?”

______3. Create the perfect travel itinerary. You have airline confirmation emails, hotel reservations, rental car information and restaurant reservations. There are a lot of parts to your trip that need to be organized. Make a schedule for all of your activities and sightseeing. Follow these four steps: Create an inspiration board, organize the essentials, add in your activities and leave time for exploration. Happy travels!

Second week- Due Friday 2/12

______1. If you could take a 4-day vacation this weekend, anywhere in the world, where would you go? List all the employees/businesses that would be needed to make their weekend happen.

______2. Study the picture from the handout provided to you. Choose a traveler in the figure and create a flow chart that describes his/her trip and shows how the money the traveler spends flows through the entire economy. You can use words, pictures, drawings, etc to enhance your flow chart; you can do your flow chart on the computer or by hand. Attach flow chart to the page provided to you.

______3. Discuss (2-3 minutes) the question: Why is the hospitality industry important to economies.

Third week- Due Friday 2/19

______1. We will have a Guest Speaker: Sergio Monleon, owner of La Marcha Tapas Bar in Berkeley, CA. He willtalk about Restaurant operation and other food services.

______2. Answered five questions about today's presentation.

Assessment Due Friday 3/4

1. “Trip of a Lifetime Project”. This project covers all aspects of the hospitality and tourism industry studied in class.
