Subject: HHS Newsletter # 3

Well, I just finished readingmy husbands copy of the Class of 54 Newsletter and do really enjoy it.FranDelauterShore writes theirs and it was my inspiration to do this one. I just think it is so nice to hear about our classmates. I received many responses to the last two newsletters and many people sent me more addresses. I just want you all to know how much I appreciate your notes. I now have64 addresses as of today - 07/25/2006. It's time to get to get on the stick and send out the latest news. Please disregard any errors in grammar or spelling as it has been a long time since Miss Rineharts class but you can bet "I will stick with it!" All you Commercial students will remember those words.

Here are some of the responses I received: Some things in the responses were personal to me and I have deleted those notes.

Sandy Gelow Ames:

Hi Petie, Thank you very much for the newsletter. I hope that your attempts at this will be successful. I would enjoy hearing about our classmates good and sad. Since I do not get to Hagerstown except for the class reunions I enjoy hearing about the luncheons, etc. On our way back from visiting our grandchildren in N.C. we were able to make one of the luncheons in Sept. about two years ago. I found it to be very rewarding to take the detour and join in.

I feel very fortunate to have a condo in Florida and have been able to spend time with Alice and Ron Weagley and also Dave and Doris Sanders during the winter. This past January the Weagley's and myself attended the HHS Florida Gathering that was started by the class of 53 and is now extended to everyone from HHS. We do plan on attending again in 07 and hope more of the classmates from 55 that will be in Florida the weekend of January 27, 2007. The gathering is in Longwood, near Orlando. If anyone is interested they can contact . or M.F. Kershner, 305 Nelson Ave., Longwood, Fl. 32750-6733 (407-831-2928). Thanks again for the newsletter, Sandy Gelow Ames Trenton, Mi.I am enclosing the information sent to me by MF as attachments. If you have trouble receiving let me know.

Bobbi Wachter Dave will be back in Hagerstown June 28 through July 3, but I will not be with him. When he does that visit to his father (who is 97 and at Homewood Nursing Home in Williamsport), I stay with our daughter and family in Harrisonburg, VA. My visits give her a break and give me lots of time with her two--son age 4 and 11 months, girl age 3 and 1 month.. I agree, being with our kids and the grands is a delight. Wish ours lived closer--our Davey and his family live in Hickory, NC, which is 4 hours drive. Deb is 5 hours from us! Our attraction for them here in NC is that the beach is about an hour and a half drive from door to ocean--kids can stay here free and parents can take a break without paying for babysitting--or we can all go and all help watch the kids!

My big interest since retiring is an intensive, two-year Bible study at our church. First year is over--Old Testament. We met for 2 1/2 hours every Sun. evening, had 6-10 hours of reading, had concepts and their locations in the Bible to memorize (193 of them), had units to memorize (20 of them) and picture symbols to memorize (191 of them). We had tests every few weeks, a 4-hour final exam, plus two 10-page typed papers to write at the end. All this and no grade and no credits--just more knowledge of the Bible, for sure. I am looking forward to the New Testament study that begins this fall. Thirteen people started the study, only seven stayed with it to the final exam and final papers!

The only other thing I do as a retiree is to occasionally play golf with Dave. After that I read, play piano, play on computer, work on computer, watch TV, and try to keep up with laundry, etc.

SOOOO good to hear from you. Now that we are connected, we should have fun keeping in touch. Love and God bless, Bobbi

Thank you for "volunteering" to do the newsletter for our class. I'm sure your inbox will be very full with messages from our class members. John graduated in '54 and we have very much enjoyed his class newsletter. Helen Cowden forwardedthe first edition to me and said she was sending my email address to you. I have now forwarded the newsletter to Jean Poffenberger Price and Pat and Will Webb. It will be very interesting to see the email address list grow.

Glad you included the states where members of our class are located. Had no idea someone else lived here in Indiana. We have lived here 4 1/2 years after living in Cincinnati for 39 years. There are also 2 class of '54 members in Indiana. John Moser isa professor at PurdueUniversity in West Lafayette and hasvisited with us. Our grandson will attend Purdue in the fall and we hope tohave an opportunity to visit John and his wife.

Recently whilelooking through photos albums, we found a May 25, 1954 edition of The Hoo-Wair-N-Wat. Some of the articles are about our class. I'm not sure how often you are planning to send out the newsletter; but if you would like to have these articles, I will scan them and forward them to you. Petie, thanks again for taking on this job. PatI received the articles and have enclosed one in this newsletter. Thanks, Pat

Dear Petie,

I really did enjoy the newsletter that helped bring me up to date on our classmates. Was so sorry to hear of all the illnesses in the class, but I am shocked at every reunion how many we have lost.

We certainly are spread out all over the country. Please keep me on the newsletter list - great of you to do this for all the rest of us. Thanks, Pat

HEY, HEY, HEY PETIE! GREAT JOB ON YOUR FIRST NEWSLETTER! SYLVIA AND I WOULD BOTH LIKE TO BE INCLUDED IN YOU EMAIL ADDRESS LIST SO WE CAN RECEIVE IT! SINCE WE ARE MARRIED TO EACH OTHER, YOU CAN KILL TWO OLD BIRDS WITH ONE STONE, SO TO SPEAK! AS FOR YOUR COMPUTER EXPERIENCE, WE CAN IDENTIFY; WE TAKE ONE STEP FORWARD, GET ALL EXCITED ABOUT OUR PROGRESS AND THEN SLIDE BACK FOUR OR MORE STEPS! THINGS JUST DO NOT COME AS EASY NOW THAT WE ARE GETTING YOUNGER AND YOUNGER,HA,HA!

PETIE, ONE THING STRUCK ME AS I READ YOUR FIRST LETTER; THERE WAS SO MUCH SICKNESS AND DEATH MENTIONED! THAT REALLY POINTED OUT WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW; WE ARE AT THAT POINT! SO I WOULD ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO INFORM YOU OF AS MANY HAPPY EVENTS IN OUR LIVES AS IS POSSIBLE, IN ORDER TO OFFSET THE GLOOM AND DOOM. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

WELL, PETIE, THAT'S ALL FOR NOW AND MANY THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORT!!!!ROBERT & SYLVIA MANN

The next day received this:

PETIE: WELL THIS EVENINGS PAPER HAD YET ANOTHER CLASS MEMBER OBIT IN IT; ROBERT PLOTNER. I REMEMBERHIM MOSTLY BECAUSEWHEN WE WERE IN SCHOOL, ALL HE WANTED TO BE WAS A PARATROOPER. YOU MAY REMEMBER HIM THAT WAY ALSO; HE WAS ALWAYS JUMPING FROM ON STAIR LANDING TO ANOTHER INSTEAD OF USING THE STEPS! THEN ONE DAY HE JUMPED OUT OF THE THIRD STORY CAFETERIA WINDOW TO THE GROUND AND IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY, HE WASN'T INJURED! I RECALL THAT I WAS SITTING IN BUD FOX'S PHYSICS CLASS AT THE TIME AND WE SAW HIM GO WHIZZING BY THE WINDOW! ACCORDING TO THE OBIT., HE GOT HIS DREAM BECAUSE IT MENTIONED THAT HE SERVED IN KOREA AS A MEMBER OF THE 101ST AIRBORNE WHICH , IF MEMORY SERVES, WAS A PARATROOPER UNIT! I NEVER KNEW HIM PERSONALLY; IT WAS THAT WAY WITH A LOT OF OUR CLASS MEMBERS BECAUSE OUR CLASS WAS SO LARGE AND IF OTHER MEMBERS WERE NOT IN THE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM LIKE MYSELF, WE NEVER REALLY HAD ANY CLASSES TOGETHER UNLESS IT WAS HOMEROOM OR PYS. ED. IT ALL SEEMS SO LONG AGO HUH? ROBERT MANN

Barbara Kepling Youtz

Hi Petie,

So sorry to hear of the loss of Adna's wife Barbara and our classmate Robert Plotner. I would never have known about the deaths if you had not sent me this e-mail. The families of Barbara and Robert will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for sending this newsletter. I did not receive the first one and would like to see it if that is possible.

Whata wonderful way to keep in touch with the members of our class!

As I write this my husband Gene and I are in our summer home in Maine awaiting news of our 46 year old son Patrick in San Francisco. Last night a social worker from San Francisco General called to say that Pat was in a motorcycle accident. A car didn't see him and hit him from the rear. He has a broken elbow, wrist, and finger and small cut on his face and no memory of the accident. He will have surgery onboth arms today. The social workers seems to think that Pat will have no permanent injury, for which I am very grateful. He is living alonewhichmay be a challenge when he is released from the hospital, but that is minor.

What a Father's Day! Once a parent, always a parent. Even when we are so concerned weknow that Pat could have been hurt a lot more and are thankful it was not worse. When Isee our son I may operate to extract a motorcycle from him.

Thanks again for the email.Yours, Barbara Keplinger Youtz Barbara - Hope everything is ok with your son - As parents we are always concerned. Let me know how he is doing?

Got an email from Don Frank and would be interested in any kind of class get-together. I missed the last reunion - got sick and just could not make it. Just a long drive from down here in Charlotte.

I am planning to come to the HJC Reunion in September and if anything is going on around the 10th it would be good timing.

Say "hi" to all for me.Ned - This is my way of passing the "hi"/

Ron and Ginger (Lashley) Hartman celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary Friday, March 17, 2006. Ginger retired from Washington County District Court and Ron retired from Mack Trucks. They have two daughters, five grandchildren (plus two deceased grandsons) and two great-granddaughters.

Don and Fran (Stoddard) Smithcelebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary June 10, 2006. They both retired from Stoddard Supply Co. Inc., after 45 years of service. They have tow children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

And, Gary and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary May 18, 2006. I retired from Washington Township Supervisors office (PA local government) and Gary retired from Mack Trucks. We have two daughters and one son, six grandsons, and two beautiful great-granddaughters. I can say that because I write the newsletter.

I am sure there are others out there that are celebrating their 50th too. Let me know.

Looking for correct address and new addresses.

I have the following e-mail address but they must be wrong because the newsletter would not go through. If you know these people’s e-mail addresses please let me know.
