Subject Harrington Municipal Elections
Nov 1, 2009 ( Sunday )
I am running as a candidate for councillor, Seat # 5, against Frank Harris ( outgoing candidate ) and Robert Parkinson.
As a group of 50+ voters LakeHarrington cottagers can have an impact on the results. Unfortunately the last time I tried to create an interest, only 8+ people cast their votes. It is imperative that we have a strong voice and not be intimidated by 3 running candidates from LakeMacdonald who could surely swing decisions. This year it is even easier, you can vote by mail.
All who have attended council meetings can attest to the shameful display of arrogance and intolerance at these meetings. A big change is definitely needed. I am only one individual but will do my utmost in this area.
Issues that I will be addressing include :
i Taxation –we are paying enough, especially after the +50 % increase imposed over the
last couple of years. Expenditures should be closely monitored and I will push for no
increases this year.
ii Gravel Pits - The topic is back again. Rezoning is being considered. We can buy
gravel cheaper than digging for it. Harrington is a cottage community, we don’t need
pits, in particular in the dump area.
iii Macdonald dam.Still in the investigation stage. I feel it should be treated as a local
improvement and not charged to all property owners.
iv Roads – in 2009 we spent over $500,000.00 to asphalt only 1.1 km of road. I don’t
believe we can afford asphalt roads. We own many kms of gravel roads that require
upgrading first.
v Management control and discipline in all endeavors of the Municipality.
