Course Description: Junior English (Honors) is comprised of American Literature and Grammar & Composition as a year-long course of study. We will also use a vocabulary workbook. We will read several short stories and at least one novel together as a class. Special focus will be on literature discussion (often using the form of the Socratic seminar). Students will be able to choose from a list of American Novels to read on their own. Grammar and composition will be taught using an online textbook.

Class Procedures and Expectations: Every student will be required to bring their school issued laptop to class. Laptops are required to be charged for classroom use. Assignments will be posted to my teacher page found on the RHS website. Homework is due at the beginning of class. Assignments that are unreadable will not be graded and will be returned to the student to redo.

Classroom behavioral expectations:

  • Show respect for yourself and others. You demonstrate this by the way you talk, act, and by the type of work that you turn in.
  • Bring your books and any materials (including assignments) that you will need for class.
  • Get drinks of water and go to the restroom before you come to class.
  • You are responsible for your assignments. Get them completed and turned in on time.
  • Be prepared to participate.
  • Follow the rules that are outlined in the student handbook.

Grading Scale: A: 100-93

B: 92-86

C:85-78

D: 77-70

F: 69-0

Late Assignments: As stated in the Redfield High School Student Handbook:

The Redfield School District believes that our students need to learn and achieve at a proficient academic level. In order to reach proficiency, students are expected to complete ALL classroom assignments. If a student fails to complete an assignment, he/she will be subject to the following consequences:

  • Students will receive one (1) free pass per class per semester where no detention will be given but the grade deduction still affects the assignment.
  • Student will receive a 30 minute detention and grade deduction per teacher policy.
  • Date and time will be determined by the teacher.
  • Students will notify their parent/guardian by phone of the unfinished assignment.
  • Assignments that are three days late will result in a zero recorded in the gradebook and Saturday School.

ØAn assignment is considered late if you do not turn it in when I ask for it to be turned in. If you do not have your homework completed when you come to class, you will be given detention.

ØDeduct 20% off the score if a late assignment is turned in by the next class period.

ØDeduct 50% off the score if a late assignment is turned in within two class periods.

ØNo credit will be given for assignments after the third day without approval by the teacher of extenuating circumstances.

Late Work Due to Absences:

You will receive the same amount of days to finish your homework that you missed due to an illness. If you know you will be gone, makeup work must be completed and turned in prior to leaving. If work is not turned in prior to a leave, the assignments will be considered late. If a student is attending a school activity, work must be turned in before I will sign the blue sheet for that activity. I will not discuss missing or late work during class time. You must see me before or after school, or during my Prep period (4th period). It is not my responsibility to tell students what assignments are missing due to an absence(s).

Extra Credit is not offered.

Special note: All students earn the grade they receive. I do not “give out” grades or give students a grade.

“Let’s have a great year!”
