Dear Members,
The IARP Executive Committee conveys greetings to all members.

In spite of the best efforts of the IARP-EC to hold the AGM in time it was not possible. The auditing of the account took lot of time. The auditors report is also being presented. The EC seeks condonation of the AGM for the delay in holding the Meeting.

The IARP activities were continued during the period under this report which included holding Executive Committee meetings, publication of the journal Radiation Protection and Environment, training programmes related to safety in utilization of radiation and radioisotopes in industry and organization of the 30th Annual Conference at Mangalore University. These activities are briefly outlined here.

  1. Organization of 30th Annual Conference of the IARP (IARPNC-2012) at Mangalore University:

The 30th Annual Conference of the IARP was organized at Mangalore University, Mangalagangotari Campus in collaboration with the University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) during March

15-17, 2012. The focal theme of the conference was Radiological Protection and Safety in Nuclear

Reactors and Radiation Installations.

The IARPNC-2012 was inaugurated by Sri S. S. Bajai, Chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.

Prof. T C Shivashankara Murthy, Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University presided over the inaugural function. While Shri Bajaj released the Conference Proceedings, Prof. Shivashankara Murthy released the souvenir. Dr. Chenappa Gowda, Registrar, Manglore University, welcomed the delegates , Dr. D. N. Sharma, President, IARP, addressed the audience and briefed about the activities of the IARP. Shri V. V. Shaha coordinated the IARP Awards Session. Dr. N. Karunakara of USIC was the convener of the conference.

The role of the IARP in spreading awareness of radiological safety in multifaceted applications of radioactivity and radiation for the peaceful purposes during the past 43 years or so was emphasized through a series of invited talks, contributed papers and posters. In view of the major public concern about the safety of the nuclear industry in the backdrop of the Fukushima (Japan) and Mayapuri (Delhi) incidents the conference addressed these issues in particular and the IARPNC-2012 was devoted to “Radiological Protection and Safety in Nuclear Reactors and Radiation Installations’. There was a special session to discuss the Fukushima event and environmental impact. The major scientific thematic areas covered were: Occupational Radiation Protection-External and Internal, Radiation Protection of the Environment and Public, Radioecology, Radiation Dosimetry, Computational Methods, Risk Assessment and Safety Analysis, Radiation Protection Instrumentation, Evolution of Safety Systems in Nuclear Reactors, ALARA Implementation in Nuclear Facilities and Challenges in Public Awareness.

About 225 scientists from various R&D units of the Department of Atomic Energy, Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and nearly 75 scientists from Nuclear Power plants, Universities and Research Institutions attended this conference. There were 16 invited talks, about 70 oral and 160 poster presentations of contributed papers. Two panel discussions on the topics “Fukushima incident and environmental impact” and “Public Awareness” were also organized.

  1. The IARP’s ‘Radiation Protection and Environment’ (RPE) journal:

Publication of the journal was continued with the able help of the Editorial Board. The printing and distribution of the journal has been entrusted to M/s Medknow through an MOU. They have been printing and distributing the other scientific journals also. As the addresses of the large number of our esteemed members are not updated, large number of journals are returned undelivered. In view of this it was decided to put the journal on the website of the IARP and print only about 300 copies of the journal for distribution to interested senior citizens whose addresses are updated.

The four issues of the Radiation Protection and Environment, Vol.34, Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 were published during the period under review:

In the present web based journal submission of papers for publication in the journal can be done online ( www. journalonweb.com/rpe). As the term of the Editorial Board is expiring shortly, the IARP-EC in its 250th meeting has reconstituted and extended the term of the present Board for a further period of 2 years, i.e. up to March, 2015. The Editorial Board was authorized to make any changes, if necessary, after discussions with fellow members of the board.
