SUBJECT: Allied Health Professional (Nurse Practitioneror Physician Assistant) -Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Bonner General Psychiatric Clinic Physician, the Allied Health Professional (Nurse Practitioneror Physician Assistant) provides patient care services by evaluating, treating, and triaging patients within the scope of individual authority granted by the applicable governing Idaho State Board of Nursing and Clinic physician. Clinical responsibilities include comprehensive health histories, performance of physical examinations, diagnostic laboratory interpretations, diagnosis and treatment of patient conditions and their causes, and patient education. The care provided shall not be denied on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, or ability to pay.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides high quality, compassionate and ethical outpatient mental health therapy to patients.
  • Screens patients about symptoms and complaints, performs comprehensive examinations for medical surveillance and diagnosis and compiles patient medical data accurately, completely and timely
  • Orders diagnostic tests and interprets test results for deviations from normal
  • Completes clinical documentation daily using Clinic EHR software.
  • Works independently and implements time management strategies.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding knowledge of all patient information (HIPAA), confidential staff and hospital business
  • Writes appropriate orders including those for narcotics, stimulants and depressant drugs, as authorized
  • Performs emergency life-saving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest and similar emergencies
  • Trains and participates in emergency response duties and responsibilities as needed
  • Maintains all required training and certifications
  • Notifies Clinic physician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation
  • Performs related assignments as required including education, wellness promotion and procedure/protocol development
  • Practices safety, environmental and/or infection control and other applicable standards
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participating in educational programs, conferences, seminars, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops as relevant to this practice and in keeping with time constraints
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, assess and interprets data considering developmental and age status and plans an approach based on each patient’s requirements, relative to age specific needs for the following groups: neonate, pediatric adolescent, adult, geriatric
  • Generates policies/procedures and reports as needed
  • Demonstrates proficiency in operating computers, printers, reproduction equipment, calculators and facsimiles as assigned in support of normal job duties
  • Must have the ability to convey compassion and caring to people
  • Must be able to be cooperative, helpful and supportive with others with whom she or he works
  • Practices effectively in a clinic care setting with varying amounts of timeline and physical demands and actively participates as a positive member of the clinic environment.
  • Promotes continuous effort in quality improvement
  • Must exhibit responsiveness to others in the organization at all levels (i.e. returning phone calls, being punctual to meetings, maintaining availability to meet)
  • Regularly keeps PracticeManager informed of departmental needs and problems
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships with all staff members

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • BGH maintains the right to establish work schedules and to be ensured of employee’s attendance when scheduled. Maintaining regular attendance and punctuality is a required Essential Function of this position.

The operational needs of departments and safety of patients may require that employees beavailable to work all shifts,weekends and holidays and in any department to meet the needs of the patients.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Skills:

Ability to provide professional care based on training, competence and judgment

Must have full capacity to read, write and comprehend as well as full capacity to make complex and routine medical judgments

Must have contemporary skills and documented CME’s

Basic computer literacy and ability to effectively learn new software programs required

  • Education:

Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program

Minimum of three (3) years experience in primary care setting required

  • Licenses / certifications required:

Current State of IdahoNurse Practitioner license and certification by the applicable accrediting organization

Meets and maintains credentialing requirements of Allied Health category of BGH staff affiliation

Current CPR and ACLS

  • Supervisory: None - works as trainer and assigns tasks as a team member with support staff
  • Supervised by: Practice Manager and BGH Chief Financial Officer

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Job allows employee to vary physical position or activity for comfort
  • In a normal workday, may be required to stand and/or walk for 8 hours or longer
