Subj: Re: [DJ] scallops, a question for goddessess

Jane's scallops were not separate pieces of fabric. They are made from one

length of fabric on each side of the quilt. The way I did mine was to sew a 3

or 4" (can't remember which) strip around my quilt, then I had made a

template (which I've shared with those that want a copy of it. If you do,

then send me a SASE to me. Email me for my address if you don't have it), and

traced the template around. I thought it turned out quite nicely. Then I

quilted that little quilting line that you see in the photo, then I sewed my

binding on the stitching line that I traced from the template, then I cut

around the binding, folded the binding to the back and slip stitched it down.

Just a quick note about scallops.

I did not sew down the pleats in my scallops on my Dear Jane. My binding

is very narrow (cut 1.5 inches and folded double, so .75 inches). I am a

big fan of scallops. Monkey and I love 'em!

I received extremely complimentary written comments from the NQA judge who

judged our guild's show and she gave it a special Judge's Recognition

ribbon for workmanship in February 1999 (also First Place and Viewer's

Choice). In July 1999 the judges at the Vermont Quilt Festival (Gerald

Roy, John Flynn, Carter Houck, and ? ) each wrote positive comments

particularly on the scallops and it won Best in Show. In April 2000 the

judges in Paducah (can't remember their names, one was Anita Shackleford I

think) each made a wonderful comment about the scallops and none of them

told me I should have sewn down the pleats. It won First Place Traditional

Pieced Amateur

Each time I have shown the quilt, the judging regarding the scallops has

been totally consistent. I received so much positive feedback on my

scallops that I wrote up my method and put it on my web site. I hope you

will have a look. I do think that with a wider binding you would have to

use a different technique and would have to sew the pleats.

I am a day behind reading mail. The DJ Retreats would not let me go no

mail on the weekend. Very, very frustrating. In desperation I finally

unsubscribed completely because I did not have time for the retreat this

time (next time for sure?) and the mail still poured in. I have had to

delete hundreds of messages unread, so I could concentrate on the DJ ones

for Sort & Forward. Yahoo is a complete disappointment so far. I hope the

next retreat will be better timing for me.

More later! Hugs, Linda & Monkey in Naples Florida

I did my scalloped edges a little differently. I made a cardboard scallop and

taped it to Brenda's triangle ruler. I then cut out all my colored tris with the

scallop all ready on them. They looked quite nice when the border was finished.

Still waiting for Christmas file to be finished so I can add my quilt to my website

and you all can see it. Sandy

In February 1999, when I finished my Dear Jane Quilt, "In Time of Friendship," I put my scallop directions on my first web site. Since then, they have become infamous among Dear Jane Friends. They are still online at for the time being.

It is difficult to update the old web site because the software I used does not work with the new version of Windows I have on my computer now. That site may just disappear some day.

I prefer the way I wrote scallop instructions for my book Quilted Diamonds: Jane Austen, Jane Stickle & Friends in 2002, but I am preserving the original version on this web site, for old times' sake. If you have the book, please follow the directions in Chapter 6. .
