population data sheet

  1. What are the indicators of development? Look at the 2012 world population data sheet website. Check out the interactive map . what information can you find? Which factors might be an indicator of a level of development and why ? Are there any indicators missing?
  1. Take a few sample countries ( use your adopted countries and a few more) from the prb data sheet and discuss the values of each indicator. Look at the top of the PRB Data sheet where values are listed.

Look at the values for the mdc versus the ldc. Which categories do your countries fit into? Why? Are there any discrepancies?

  1. Are there some indicators you would like to use and others you would not? Why?
  1. Write down the regions listed on the PBR Data sheet.

5. Using the data gathered, create categories for each of the regions listed on the pbr data sheet according to levels of development. Choose one of three categories:

1. Least developed 2. Developing

3. Industrialized

  1. once you have classified your region, list them on a separate sheet of paper in order by category.

7. on the blank world map provided, create a map using the gathered information. Remember to have all of the TODALS ( title, orientation, date, author, legend, scale) Draw a line separating the the developed countries from the non-developed countries using your data to guide you.

8. What is the Brandt line? If you don’t know, google it . Does the line on your map relate to this?

  1. What are the geographic implications of the pattern on your map? Can you explain the line separating developed and developing countries.
  2. Do you see a pattern of the north/south split revealed on your map?
  3. Why might the pattern on the map be a geographic critique of Rostow’s model of development? Consider if development levels might be different if developed and less developed countries were more geographically intertwined.
  4. What problems of development might this geographic pattern imply?
  5. Explain the core periphery model. What limitations might the core periphery model have as a geographic critique of economic models of development? Can you think of other critiques?
