Social Psychology

Chapter 1 Theories

Be sure to know and be able to explain all six contemporary theories located on page 20.

  1. What are the names of the psychologists that are most prominent or are most closely associated with each of the contemporary theories?
  2. What are the five goals of psychology?

Chapter 6 Learning Behavior

Be sure to be able to explain all elements of classical conditioning and operant conditioning.

  1. Who is the psychologist most associated with classical conditioning? Explain how his experiment with dogs relates to classical conditioning.
  2. What is the difference between discrimination and generalization when talking about classical conditioning?
  3. How did the experiment with baby Albert relate to classical conditioning? What were some of the odd results?
  4. What is the difference between the unconditioned stimulus and the conditioned stimulus?
  5. Explain how negative reinforcement works in increasing the likelihood that a person would continue doing a behavior.
  6. Identify and explain the four types of reinforcement schedules that apply to operant conditioning.
  7. What is the definition of learning?

Chapter 7 Memory

Be able to explain the three types of memory, the three processes of memory, and the three types of memory based on storage.

  1. What is the difference between selective attention and feature extraction?
  2. What is the order that people use when inputting info by selective attention?
  3. What is the difference between recall, recognition, and relearning?
  4. Explain what it means to have state dependant memory.
  5. What strategies must a person employ if they want to make sure that the information that they are inputting is going to move to short term and long term memory?
  6. Explain elaborative rehearsal and maintenance rehearsal.
  7. Proactive and retroactive interference, what is the difference?
  8. What problems regarding eyewitness memory did you learn about when watching the two videos about memory? Be sure to be able to explain them.

For the Written Response Portion of the Exam:

You will be expected to respond to 4 questions with a written response that demonstrates that you know and understand the concept and standard of content.

1. A question involves the altoid clip from the tv show and how it demonstrates all the major points of classical conditioning. You will need to be able to explain the major terms and how the clip demonstrates them.

  1. A question involves operant conditioning and how it is used in training a dog to and electric fence. Again, all major terms and concepts must be accurately explained in showing how the training employs operant conditioning.
  1. A question involves the eye-witness videos that we used in talking about memory. Specifically you will need to use appropriate terminology to explain factors and reasons for why eye-witness memory may be flawed.
  1. The last question is the very basic info that we started the class with, the contemporary theories of psych. Again you will be expected to identify behaviors that are displayed in a v clip and appropriately explain the cause of them with the six contemporary theories.
