Learning Target: Students will plan and assess an appropriate learning activity for a special needs child.

Students with Special Needs:

An Inclusion Plan for the Classroom Teacher

Working with another student design a lesson plan that will accommodate the special needs students listed below. Remember you must design a lesson that will accommodate all the needs of the children in the room including those regularly assigned to you.

You will be assigned to one of the following scenarios:

For each situation fill out a lesson plan:

  • Identify a grade level standard from Click on your grade level and an appropriate educational area.
  • Fill in fully the lesson plan that would accommodate all children
  • Write a descriptive paragraph of the handicapping condition. Use the internet to help describe your handicapping condition or your online text. Use this as one or two of the four APA references required.
  • List the accommodations that you would make for the lesson planned as well as the environment of the classroom.
  • Include everyday tasks like washing hands, moving around the class room, etc., if that will help the special needs student do better in your assigned environment.

Scenario One:

You are teaching Kindergarten and a child with a sight handicap is assigned to your classroom. His name is Jacob and he can see only blurred shapes. You have a crowded room with sand tables, water table, climbing toys, housekeeping area, book/library corner, several low tables and chairs for snacks, meals, etc.

You want to do a unit on Art. Design a project that will allow him to participate and experience the body senses such as feel, touch, taste, smell, etc. List the precautions you would need to take in arranging the room, handling supplies, giving directions and what would need to be done so he could participate.

Scenario Two:

You are teaching first grade and have 3 downs syndrome children. One child, a boy is bigger and louder than the two girls, but appears to have some social skills. Both girls are lower in ability and have difficulty with speech.

Design an outing or fieldtrip to a local attraction that will have some educational benefit, like a trip to the Point Defiance Zoo. Include in your plan interactive activities that will enhance the learning of all children.

Scenario Three:

You are teaching third grade. Eric is a hyperactive child with social and self esteem problems. You want to do a play for a parent spring event that involves all the class.

Decide what play to do and the accommodations for inclusion that would need to be made for Eric to have a successful experience.

Include in your plan ways to boost his self esteem, but yet allow others to feel valued as well. How will you handle emotional outbursts and his inability to concentrate on any one thing for very long?

Scenario Four:

You are a preschool teacher in a public school system that has access to other members of what would be a multi-disciplinarian such school nurse, occupational therapist, physical therapist, school psychologist, etc. Carlyn is in your program and has mental retardation. She has a supportive family that shows acceptance and support, plus has played with neighborhood children some. Since entering your program she has become increasingly withdrawn.

You want to do a music lesson that allows children to experience different types of homemade music… such as spoons clapping, drums from cylinders, bottle tunes, etc. Include in your plan ways to include Carlyn that will give her a sense of accomplishment and hence maybe a boost in self esteem.

Scenario Five:

You are a fourth grade teacher and teach reading in the afternoon daily to a group of slower readers. One of your children named Alansa is dyslectic and has very low reading skills. You want her to feel like she is part of the class and not singled out as having a special handicap. What would you do to accommodate her reading handicap while designing a reading project that would show student understanding of the material read? You want to have them do something that shows they understood what the reading was about and utilize it in a practical way.

Include in your lesson plan: the reading event/story or situation, follow up activity that would test for understanding and accommodations for Alansa’s dyslectic special needs.

Scenario Six:

You are a first grade teacher and have a young student who has a behavioral disorder that gets in the way of sitting quietly or doing any work at all for longer than a couple of minutes. Design a lesson plan that focuses on early math skills that will satisfy his inclusion placement and accommodate his needs.

Include in the plan the actual regular math lesson that accommodates the needs of all children

and then how you will keep this student at least part of the time on task. Don’t ignore the fact that sometimes peers are more influential than adults in this process.
