Students of the Month for April

Rotarians honored Socorro High School students Arianna Sanchez and Ian Hayhurst at last week’s meeting; pictured with them is Penny Lommen. Ms. Sanchez, a junior, was honored for her work in electives, in particular, her studies in Chinese. Mr. Hayhurst, a freshman, was recognized for his achievements in physical education.

JUST FOR FUN

The Ninth Hole

One day three golfers were playing a round of golf. They were on the ninth hole near the highway getting ready to tee off. One of the golfers had his club in mid swing when he noticed a funeral procession coming up the highway. He lowered his club and took off his hat as he stood there reverently waiting for it to pass. The other two golfers followed suit and all three stood quietly until the last car was out of sight.

The first golfer then made a beautiful drive right down the middle of the fairway. “You know, Jack?” One of the other golfers said. “That was really nice the way you waited for that funeral procession to pass.”

“Well I felt it was the least I could do,” Jack responded. “After all she did give me 30 of the best years of her life.”

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

(Continued from inside page)

So far, eight individuals have successfully completed the apprenticeship program, and two of them are working in the community. Ms. Otero said her husband is a former TLC apprentice and a graduate of Magdalena High School.

Ms. Otero, also an MHS grad, completed the apprenticeship program and has obtained general business and continuous quality improvement certificates. In addition, she continues to take classes at CNM.

There is no travel-time charge for customers in San Acacia, San Antonio and within the Village of Magdalena. At the close of her presentation, Len gave Ms. Otero a membership form; Reuben is her co-sponsor.

JUST FOR FUN

Sister Mary Ann, who worked for a home health agency, was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients when she ran out of gas. As luck would have it, a Texaco Gasoline station was just a block away.

She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her that the only gas can he owned had been lent out, but she could wait until it was returned.

Since Sister Mary Ann was on the way to see a patient, she decided not to wait and walked back to her car. She looked for something in her car that she could fill with gas and spotted the bedpan she was taking to the patient.

Always resourceful, Sister Mary Ann carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with gasoline, and carried the full bedpan back to her car.

As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two Baptists watched from across the street. One of them turned to the other and said, “If it starts, I’m turning Catholic.”

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Reuben introduced Jessie Otero, who with her husband, Bobby, runs he local branch of TLC Plumbing. The company bears the initials of the original owner, but if people want to think they stand for Tender Loving Care, well, that’s okay, too. Dale Armstrong started the company in 1987, and in 1989, the company acquired its name. In 1993, the name was changed to TLC Plumbing and Utility to reflect its expanded services. Ms. Otero called 1997 a significant year, when Dale partnered up with Ron Burnett, “a real visionary.”

Today, the company has 300 employees, and recently expanded into the Socorro area, providing residential and commercial services. TLC has its own remodeling crew, cement crew, water treatment specialists and electricians – and provides its employees with excellent benefits.

TLC only interviews and hires the top 5 percent of applicants – “We only hire people who fit the bill,” said Ms. Otero. “We stand by our work, and we want our work to last.” Among the core values of the business are honesty, hard work and consistency, qualities that are found in people living in rural areas. TLC offers a four-year apprenticeship program for residents of Socorro and Catron counties. Anyone completing the program, including taking two classes a semester at CNM in select courses, receives a $25,000 check at the end of the program.
