back when the great mikado ruled japan there lived to frogs. one dwelt in a ditch near the town of osaka and the other dwelt in a little stream running through the city of kyoto. while they had never met each other they both yearned to sea a little of the world. the frog who lives in kyoto wanted to visit osaka and the frog who lived in osaka wanted to visit kyoto. one fine morning they set out from their homes along the road connecting kyoto to osaka. halfway between the two towns there was a mountain that had to be climbed. it takes them a long time and a great many hops to reach the top but they finally reached it. meeting one another was a surprise but they soon learned of each other's quest. osaka frog proposed that they stand on their hind legs holding onto each other so they could each take a peek at the town to which he was traveling. this idea pleases kyoto frog and he jumped up at once putting his front feet on the shoulders of osaka frog who jumped up as well. they stretched themselves as high as they could holding each other tightly. kyoto frog turns his nose towards osaka and osaka frog turned his nose towards kyoto. the foolish frogs forgot that when they stood up their eyes lay in the backs of their heads so while their noses pointed to the places they wanted to go their eyes beheld the places from which they had come. osaka frog expresses dismay over who kyoto looked exactly like osaka. kyoto frog was disappointed thinking that osaka looked exactly like kyoto. they agreed that to continue on wood be foolish. they bade farewell to each other and set of for home. to the end of their lives they never ventured forth again. they believed that osaka and kyoto which were as different as two towns can be were as alike as two peas
