Unique 00220/00225 - Overheight Vehicle Warning System

(2015 Specifications: 12-04-14)

(Consider using these overheight vehicle warning system specifications when the vertical clearance is reduced below 15 feet 3 inches and the ADT is greater than 5,000.)

00220.02 Public Safety and Mobility - Add the following bullet to the end of the bullet list:

• When the falsework vertical clearance for the ___________ structure is reduced to less than 15 feet 3 inches, protect traffic by installing an overheight vehicle warning system (OVWS). Design placement and spacing of the OVWS signing based on the pre‑construction posted speed to provide adequate warning to allow traffic to react and safely maneuver away from the restricted area. Follow the "Traffic Control Device Spacing Table" shown on the standard drawings. Follow the manufacturer’s installation and operation manuals for location and placement details for the detector, audible alarms and warning sign.

Add the following subsection:

00225.16(c) Overheight Vehicle Warning System - Use an OVWS from the QPL with the following features:

• Detector - The detector is an electronic device consisting of a dual eye detector unit mounted on poles positioned on opposite sides of the roadway in advance of the obstruction.

Audible Traffic Alarm - The audible traffic alarm consists of a directional bell, horn, or siren that produces a minimum sound level of 100 db at 10 feet. The alarm shall be activated and time controlled by the detection unit. Install the traffic alarm adjacent to the detector, as directed.

Variable Message Warning Sign (VMWS) - The VMWS is an electronic warning sign that displays an appropriate variable message, as directed. Use only amber LED's for the characters of the warning message. Characters shall be at least 12 inches in height. The message shall consist of a maximum of two lines of text, with a maximum of 12 characters per line. Provide two amber, 12 inch LED, alternating flashing beacons for the warning sign. Install one beacon over each of the top corners of the sign housing. Lighted message and flashers shall be activated and time controlled by the detection unit.

Audible Worker Alarm - The audible worker alarm consists of a bell, horn or siren that produces a minimum sound level of 100 dB at 10 feet. The alarm shall be activated and time controlled by the detection unit. Install the worker alarm in close proximity to the work area being protected by the OVWS, as directed.

Add the following subsection:

00225.46(d) Overheight Vehicle Warning System - Install an OVWS according to manufacturer’s recommendations and meeting the requirements of 00225.16(c). Set alignment and height of the light beam to identify vehicles or loads over 14 feet above the roadway.

Add the following subsection:

00225.62(c) Overheight Vehicle Warning System - Maintain the OVWS according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, TCP, and as directed until the height restriction is removed. While the OVWS is in use, have replacement components on site to ensure continuous operation of the OVWS.

Replace all damaged components or parts as soon as possible, but no later than 4 hours after the Contractor discovers or is notified of damage.

Add the following subsection:

00225.86(c) Overheight Vehicle Warning System - The quantities of overhead vehicle warning systems will be measured on the unit basis, for each installed system.

00225.96 Temporary Electrical Signs - Add the following pay item:

(c) Overheight Vehicle Warning System Each

Add the following paragraph after the paragraph that beings "Items (a) and (b) includes…":

Item (c) includes operating, maintaining, moving, and removing each system.

Add the following paragraph to the end of this subsection:

No separate or additional payment will be made for replacement components or parts.
