- Did you know the ratio pi has been studied by the human race for almost 4,000 years? It's been studied extensively since then that, in 1995, a man named Hiroyoki Gotu was able to memorize 42,195 digits of pi, and is still considered the pi champion today. You could also try to memorize that many digits of pi for a chance to win a prize on pi day! Today, Mu Alpha Theta is hosting various math games during lunch in the commons from seeing who can name the most digits of pi memorized, to guessing how many candies are in a tub, and finally a unit circle cake walks where you could win a sweet treat! - Alan Turing once said, “We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.” We highlight Alan Turing, in honor of Mu Alpha Theta’s math week. Turing was an English mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, and theoretical biologist. He created the Turing Machine, using algorithms to figure out solutions to given variables. This was the infant stages to the computers we see today. Turing also worked closely with the British forces during World War II. Working in the ciphering unit, he created a computer that would crack the almost impossible-to-decipher German code. It was a turning point in the war to ultimately assist the Allies in winning the war. Turing made many contributions to the mathematical field especially in the field of ciphering. Mr. Turing was correct in that we can only see a short distance ahead, but the members of Mu Alpha Theta know that studying mathematics is the key to being able to help what needs to be done in the future.
