Fêtons Mardi Gras!

Day 1

Teacher gives a brief over view of Mardi Gras (power point presentation) and the students fill in the ‘gaps’ through the completion of a web quest.

Day 2

Upon entering the classroom, students are given a card with a picture (primary sources) and have to match it to a larger picture displayed in the classroom. Ideally 4 – 5 students should be assigned per picture. They are to complete the photo analysis worksheet within the group. This is the formation of the ‘krewe’. One member from the krewe is responsible for collecting markers, butcher paper and construction paper from the teacher. The krewe is to work on creating a name, a mascot, a doubloon design and an invitation to the Bal Masqué on Mardi Gras (en français, bien sûr!).

Day 3

Students are to finish up the activities from Day 2.

Day 4

Krewes are to give a brief presentation on their krewe. Mask templates, glitter, feathers and other craft supplies are available for mask making. A king cake is available for sampling. The individual who receives the piece of cake with the baby is REX.
