Unitname:Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
Unit Purpose:This unit deals with the cultural awareness required for effective communication and cooperation with persons of diverse cultures
Requirements to successfully complete this unit of competency
The individual being assessed must provide evidence of specified essential knowledge, being:
- Availability of resources and assistance within and external to the organisation in relation to cultural diversity issues
- Own cultural conceptions and pre-conceptions and perspective of diverse cultures
- Recognition of cultural diversity in Australian society with many individuals living in many cultures
- Recognition of cultural influences and changing cultural practices in Australia and its impact on diverse communities that make up Australian society
- Recognition of culture as a dynamic social phenomenon
- Recognition of culture as a range of social practices and beliefs evolving over time
- Recognition of impact of cultural practices and experiences on personal behaviour, interpersonal relationships, perception and social expectations of others
- Recognition of the unique way individuals may experience a culture and respond to past experiences
- Recognition that the word 'normal' is a value-laden, excluding concept that often precludes acknowledgment of the diversity of people, their life experiences and situations
- The principles of equal employment opportunity, sex, race, disability, anti-discrimination and similar legislation and the implications for work and social practices
- The role and use of language and cultural interpreters
as well as skills, including;
- Apply culturally respectful practices in the workplace and to demonstrate respect and inclusiveness of culturally diverse people in all work practices
- Form effective workplace relationships with co-workers and colleagues of diverse backgrounds and cultures
- Participate in identifying and implementing culturally safe work practices
- Respond respectfully and sensitively to cultural beliefs and practices that may cause harm
- Sensitively and respectfully communicate with persons of diverse backgrounds and cultures
- Use basic conflict resolution and negotiation skills
- Use effective strategies to address and eliminate discrimination and bias in the workplace
This unit is most appropriately assessed in the workplace or a simulated workplace environment under the normal range of work conditions
- Assessment should be conducted on more than one occasion to cover a variety of circumstances to
establish consistency
- Holistic assessment of this competency unit is encouraged, to ensure application of these skills in
conjunction with specific work functions but the unit may be delivered and assessed independently

Reportingof assessmentoutcomes
Your Transcript of Academic Record lists all of your results in all your study to date. This is an ungraded unit; therefore your result will be recorded and reported to you as Competent (AC)orNot Yet Competent (NYC). If you have achieved competency in this unit but are unable to finish the qualification, you will receive a Transcript of Academic Record showing only the units you have completed. You will also receive a Statement of Attainment for the unit/units you have successfully completed. Your final reported results can be accessed from the DET Student Portal
Recognition and credit transfers:
You can apply to have your previous study, work and/or life experiences recognised. Recognition of Prior Learning will be determined according to TAFE NSW Recognition Policy.

Assessment feedback, review or appeals
Your teacher will provide feedback not later than three (3) weeks after all assessment activities have been conducted.
If you would like to request a review of your results or if you have any concerns about your results, contact your teacher or head teacher.
You will have three (3) weeks from the date you receive your results in which to make an appeal and request a review.
You will receive a response within ten (10) working days after receipt of the request.
Your head teacher will address the appeal in accordance with Assessment Guidelines for TAFE NSW.
Assessment: reasonable adjustments
If you are a student with a disability it is important for you to indicate this on you enrolment form and make contact with the Teacher/Consultant for Students with a Disability in you Institute for further information. If possible, this should happen before you enrol. They will provide you with appropriate information about the range of units available. Teachers and teacher consultants will arrange for students with a disability to be given reasonable adjustment in assessment on an individual needs basis.
Teachers may make reasonable allowance for the learners, based on the evide4nce provided, in accordance with the TAFE NSW Assessment policy and guidelines. This may relate to the timeframe for submitting/attempting the assessment task or to an alternative form of assessment evidence to be used for assessing eh learner’s level of achievement.
