In this activity you and your partner are going to model the term on your coal card. You will create the geological land formation (hill, mountain, flat terrain, etc.) and show the mine entrance or method of coal removal. As we reviewed in class, the process of extracting the coal will be different depending on the land formation and the location of the coal seam. You will make the landform and a coal seam (with chocolate chips) using all edible materials.

Discuss with your partner what materials you would like to use and the general plan for your design. Use the space below to work out your plan.

Draw your model. Be sure to label the landforms, the coal seam, what type of mining you were using, and any additional items you have placed in your model.

Now that you have a plan, send one person to retrieve the materials. You may then get started on your landform. Make sure the entire landform fits on the paper plate!
