Student Teaching Observation/Evaluation

Fall 2017

Supervisors, cooperating teachers, and student teachers will engage in a total of four formal observations/evaluations, with the first three being formative and the final serving as a summative recap. The Formative Evaluations should be completed at the end of September, October, and November. Cooperating teachers and faculty supervisors should also complete the Mid-term Standards Progress Reportat the end of the first quarter (according to the placement school calendar). The Formative Evaluation, Mid-term Standards Progress Report, and Summative EvaluationGuidelines may all be found on the department of Education and Youth Studies website:

All written evaluations should be submitted within one week of the observation. Evaluations may be uploaded directly to the student teacher’s foldervia a shared drive in Google (ST Evals F16 -> “Student Teacher Name”). Or you may email them as attachments to the program coordinator at . Please save your evaluation using the student teacher’s name, the type and number of evaluation, and the evaluator’s initials. For example, the first formative evaluation for student teacher, John Smith, completed by his cooperating teacher, Mary Johnson, would be saved as: JSmithFE1 byMJ. The Mid-term Standards Progress report for the same student teacher, by the same cooperating teacher would be saved as: JSmithMTbyMJ. The Summative Evaluation, along the same lines, would be saved as: JSmithSEbyMJ.

Student teachers will be expected to engage informally with all ten teacher standards during each lesson that they teach. Over the course of the three formative observations/evaluations, student teachers will need to directly address each of the ten Wisconsin State Teacher Standards at least once. See ( The rationale behind identifying 3-4 focal standards for each of the formative evaluations is to elicit detailed reflection from student teachers and provide an opportunity for directed feedback from supervisors and cooperating teachers. The Student-Teacher Assessment Rubrics packet provides detailed guidelines regarding the evaluation of the student teacher and is located on the department website. The order in which the standards are addressed is up to the cooperating teacher and student teacher. Here is one possible setup:

Observation/Evaluation #1: Planning Focus Standards

1. Content Knowledge

2. Development

3. Diversity

7. Planning

Observation/Evaluation #2: Instruction Focus Standards

4. Instructional Methods and Design

5. Motivation and Management

6. Communication

Observation/Evaluation #3: Evaluation Focus Standards

8. Assessment

9. Reflective Practice

10. Community and Collegiality

The final, Summative Evaluation will address the entire student teaching experience and touch upon all ten standards, general trends that have emerged over the course of the semester, and any specific anecdotes that provide insight into the performance and potential of the student teacher. This summative evaluation will also serve as a letter of reference for the student teacher. (The summative evaluation is usually completed between mid-December and early January.)
