SLO Advisory Group

Minutes– 9/24/09

Attendees: Marybeth Buechner, Paul Degennaro, Julie Hawthorne, Stuart Graybill, Celina Ing, Karen Kunimura, Lonnie Larson, Chris Tromborg, Alan Keys

·  SLOs & Accreditation site visit –

o  The need for the group to be familiar with the self-study document, especially those components that reference the SLO advisory group was discussed. We reviewed various components of the SLO process that the group has either facilitated or been involved with since its inception in 2004. Documentation of these components exists in several locations including the SLO website, minutes of the curriculum committee (and GE subcommittee, in particular), Socrates, Planning “pamphlet”, and departmental SLO assessment plans.

·  Upcoming SLO assessment planning workshops

o  Four workshops will be held over the next 2 weeks to assist faculty with all levels of SLO assessment development and analysis. Members volunteered to assist Alan at 1 or more of these workshops. See announcement below.

·  SLO assessment planning templates & alternatives

o  Alan discussed the use of alternative SLO assessment documents by various departments – (Math, Chemistry) It was determined that the standard template seem to be working well for most departments across the campus, but alternative reporting documentation would be acceptable as long as the 3 components of the SLO assessment strategy are reflected. At present, most departments are using the standard templates, so there is no immediate issue regarding clarity or consistency of reporting.

·  Unit plan and Program review integration

o  The addition of an SLO update section to the program review process was initiated last year. It was suggested that SLO assessment information that departments report in their unit plans and/or SLO assessment plans can be “rolled up” into the new program review section. This integration will be reviewed as soon as more program reviews come in,

·  Student Services SLO update

o  Student Services has made great strides in their SLO assessment efforts. It appears that ALL units have an assessment plan and most have already or are currently assessing at least one of their unit-specific SLOs. Richard Erlich as done a great job in facilitating these efforts.

Go to http://web.scc.losrios.edu/slo/studentserviceslos to view the update that Richard created and the link to each unit’s program review. SLO assessment information is located in section 3.

§  iClicker and SLOs – Stuart gave an update on the use of iClickers and SLO assessment possibilities. The anecdotal response from students and faculty has been overwhelmingly positive.

Department SLO Assessment Planning Sessions – Fall, 2009

Whether you are designing your initial departmental SLO plan or are updating an existing one, the upcoming SLO working sessions will provide tools and collegial collaboration to help your SLO assessments move forward.

Session topics will include, but not be limited to 1) creating SLO-specific assessments, 2) converting existing classroom assessments into SLO assessments, 2) designing a flexible and sustainable assessment cycle, and 3) integrating ongoing SLO assessments with unit plans and program review.

These sessions are useful for department chairs, departmental teams (2 or more faculty) or individual faculty interested in course- or program-specific assessment.

Bring your existing departmental SLO plan and/or SLOs from core courses or courses of particular interest to your department.

For more information on SCC’s SLO assessment strategy and tools, explore the Department SLO Assessment Strategy and Planning Tools link on SCC’s SLO website – http://web.scc.losrios.edu/slo
