Student “I Can Statements” for
Science Standards
GRADE 6
I Can Statement / Standard # Met- I can determine and use appropriate safe procedures, tools, measurements, graphs and math skillsin physical science (Benchmark 6.1.3.4.1).
- I can convert units within the metric system and estimate the measurements of common objects using metric units (Benchmark 6.1.3.4.2).
- I understand that matter is anything that has mass and volume and use the particle model of matter to explain density, dissolving, compression, diffusion, and thermal expansion (Benchmark 6.2.1.1.1).
- I can identify evidence of physical changes (changing phase, changing shape, and dissolving), and describe how mass is conserved during a physical change in a closed system (Benchmarks 6.2.1.2.1 & 6.2.1.2.2).
- I can explain how heat, the motion and arrangement of particles describe the states of matter (solids, liquids and gasses) and state changes (melting, freezing, condensation and evaporation) (Benchmark 6.2.1.2.3).
- I understand that energy is the ability to cause change andcan change forms (including thermal, electrical, chemical, mechanical, potential and kinetic)(Benchmark 6.2.3.2.1).
- I can describe how heat energy is transferred in conduction, convection and radiation (Benchmark 6.2.3.2.3).
- I understand that waves are the transfer of energy without the transfer of matter and that waveshave properties (speed, wavelength, frequency and amplitude) (Benchmark 6.2.3.1.1).
- I can explain how the vibration of particles in air and other materials results in the transfer of sound waves (Benchmark 6.2.3.1.2).
- I can use wave properties of light to explain reflection, refraction and the color spectrum (Benchmark 6.2.3.1.3).
- I understand that motion is the change of position over time because I can measure and calculate the speed of an object and graph its motion (Benchmarks 6.2.2.1.1 & 6.2.2.1.2).
- I know that force is a push or a pull; it is something that changes the motion of an object and can be balanced or unbalanced. (Benchmark 6.2.2.2.1).
- I can identify the forces acting on an object and describe how the sum of the forces affects the motion of the object (Benchmark 6.2.2.2.2).
- I can explain the difference between mass and weight (Benchmark 6.2.2.2.4).
- I can identify a common engineered system and evaluate its impact on the daily life of humans and human interactions (Benchmark 6.1.2.1.1).
- I understand that there is no perfect engineered design and that new technologies have consequences that may increase some risks and decrease others (Benchmark 6.1.2.1.2).
- I can describe the trade-offs in using manufactured products in terms of features, performance, durability and cost (Benchmark 6.1.2.1.3).
- I can explain the importance of learning from past failures, in order to improve future designs of similar products or systems (Benchmark 6.1.2.1.4).
- I can use and document an engineering design process that includes identifying criteria and constraints, making representations, testing and evaluation, and refining the design as needed to construct a product or system that solves a problem (Benchmark 6.1.2.2.1).
- I can describe a system in terms of its subsystems and parts, as well as its inputs, processes and outputs (Benchmark 6.1.3.1.1 & 6.1.3.1.2).
