Lyman T. Johnson Odyssey Award

Purpose:

The University of Kentucky Student Government Association wishes to recognize one student who has demonstrated a sincere commitment to working for the betterment of the campus and/or community. This award is in honor of Lyman T. Johnson, the first African-American student to enroll at the University of Kentucky.

SGA will award a $3,000.00 scholarship to a student that the committee finds to have most closely demonstrated the spirit and dedication of Lyman T. Johnson.

Requirements:

The applicant must:

-  Have attended UK one academic year prior to applying

-  Be graduating no earlier than May 2018

-  Have full-time status

-  Be involved in at least one campus organization

-  Be in good academic standing with the University

-  Not be an elected or appointed member of the Student Government Association

-  Submit an unofficial transcript with application

-  Submit a resume or curriculum vitae with application

-  Submit a letter of recommendation from a UK faculty member or administrator

-  Submit as essay of 2 to 3 pages typed, double spaced

-  NOTE: this scholarship application is only applicable for one school year

Selection Process:

A Student Government Scholarship Selection Committee will review applications in search of one whom:

-  Has demonstrated a high degree of personal integrity

-  Has dedicated themselves to the betterment of the campus and/or community

-  Has overcome challenges and obstacles on the path to success

The committee will review all submitted documents and if necessary, ask for a follow up interview.

Logistics:

-  Application deadline: Friday, April 7th, 2017 by 5:00 pm.

-  Return to Room 351 Blazer Dining (Student Government Office)

-  Applicants failing to submit all required documents will not be considered
