French Immersion, Grade 9 - academic

Welcome and bienvenue, French Immersion students, to the beginning of your high school experience in this language program! In this grade 9 level Immersion course you will have the chance to expand your knowledge of French in even richer contexts than ever before. You will study literature and culture by twentieth-century French North American authors. Enrich your oral communication, reading and writing skills through novels and selected poems, short stories,songs, films and newspaper articles from the French-speaking world in North America.
You will have the opportunity to participate in Reading Circles in which you study a novel in groups then develop a dynamic presentation of your creative genius. You will also make use of our computer lab using programs like Yablaand doing research. The ability to understand written, oral and spoken French are required which you are sure to have developed since grade 1 until now. Final assessments include an oral presentation, a listening and a written exam testing your skills in both grammar and literature. À bientôt!

Learning Strategies 1: Skills for Success in Secondary School, Grade 9 – open

This course is designed to assist the Immersion students to gain greater confidence and motivation in his/her ability to learn. A variety of learning strategies will be examined and planning skills will be reinforced and refined. In the process, students will become better, more independent and responsible learners.
Prerequisite:For students who have completed their elementary school education in either an Immersion or French first language program.
French Immersion, Grade 10 – academic

Students will continue to sharpen their abilities in the French language through the study of Francophone literature and culture. At least one novel, poems, short stories, films, plays, and articles will be read. Exciting literary works will be thematically combined with music for a truly inspirational experience.

French Immersion, Grade 10 Civics – open

Students will be introduced to an exciting French adaption of the online simulation exercise, The Civic Mirror” where they will be members of a virtual society, buying and selling properties and becoming active citizens in an imaginary country. They will be responsible to take care of a “family” and their actions will determine their own successes and failures. The Civic Mirror will be supported by in class readings about the Canadian system of government, what it means to be a Canadian citizen, and civic rights. Hopefully, at the end of the course students will be motivated to be French-speaking, global citizens who want to make a difference!

French Immersion, Career Studies Grade 10 – open

In this insightful course, students will gain practical knowledge about career choices, trends, and opportunities. They will examine their own strengths and weaknesses and be informed of the need for French fluency as a vehicle for success. This course prepares students for life’s transitions. Students will develop action plans to help them realize their goals and lead successful lives.

French Immersion, Grade 11 – University Preparation

In this inspiring course, students will examine a variety of literary genres- music, novels, plays, short stories, and films. They will be challenged with written assignments in the form of critiques, précis, and a formal research essay, emphasizing the correct use of grammar and language conventions throughout. Oral communication in French only will be a necessary ingredient for success and students’ abilities should be enhanced as a result!

Entrepreneurship: The Venture, Grade 11 – College Preparation

Students will learn the importance of French communication as a vehicle for entrepreneurial success. They will use their skills to create a success venture plan of a student-run school-based or summer business. In addition, through this hands on, practical experience, students will develop the values, traits, and skills of successful entrepreneurs....en français!, making the French Immersion presence here at Suzuki even more exciting!
Prerequisite: Must be a student in the French Immersion Program
Travel and Tourism: A Regional Geographic Perspective, Grade 11 – Open

Through a variety of French media, students will be introduced to the exciting world of travel. They will expand on their understanding of the unique characteristics of selected world regions and the impact of environmental, cultural, economic, and political factors that influence travel and tourism. Students will be inspired to step outside of their boundaries since they will figuratively travel to destinations they have always dreamed of...Bon voyage!!!
