ADAPTABILITY

DEFINITION: Remains effective while dealing with different people or in various situations, tasks, and/or responsibilities.

Many jobs in Student Affairs require employees to be effective in a variety of situations. Some jobs involve several tasks while other jobs require work with students or other individuals who come from different cultural, social, and/or economic backgrounds.

KEY BEHAVIORS:

1.Fits in and is able to work with or communicate with people at all levels of the organization.

2.Moves from a line job to a staff role (or vice versa) or a non-supervisory to a supervisory role and remains effective.

3.Remains effective despite changes in job (e.g., new organizational structure, supervisor, department, procedures or systems, cultural or policy changes, and conflicting priorities.)

DEFINITION: Consistently meets the day to day demands of the job. Works the schedule agreed upon by the employee and supervisor or as necessary.

KEY BEHAVIORS:

1.Reports for work, meetings, appointments on time.

2.Follows policies regarding sick and vacation leave.

3.Uses leave judiciously and for the purposes intended.

4.Considers peak work periods, scheduling needs of co-workers, other relevant factors and coordinates anticipated leave with supervisor or others in work group.

DEFINITION: Thoroughly accomplishes a task with concern for all the areas involved, no matter how small. Some jobs need people who can handle both the small and large parts of a task. Such individuals won=t overlook what needs to be done and can be depended on to accomplish each task accurately and completely.

KEY BEHAVIORS:

1.Keeps a project checklist, covering all the details that might be overlooked.

2.Follows procedures exactly to make sure all parts of a job are completed.

3.Compares finished work to expectation.

4.Performs routine or repetitious tasks with care and attention.

COLLABORATION AND TEAMWORK

DEFINITION: Depending upon job or specific assignment, works effectively within the Student Affairs Agency and/or works with persons in other Student Affairs agencies, with faculty, students, or other personnel at the University or in the community, to accomplish organizational goals and identify and resolve problems.

Teams might include co-workers within a unit, all employees within a Student Affairs agency, or persons assigned to a committee, task force, or special project. Active cooperation by every member is vital to team success. Team members cannot sit back and observe or allow others to do the work; they must work pro-actively to achieve group goals and facilitate cohesiveness.

KEY BEHAVIORS:

Oral Communication: expresses ideas effectively in individual and group situations, informal and formal situations. Includes non-verbal communication or body language.

Oral Presentation: presents ideas effectively to individuals or groups. Includes classroom instruction and presentation as well as other formal speaking situations.

Written communication: clearly expresses ideas in writing; includes content as well as proper use of grammar, organization, and structure.

The type of communication - oral, oral presentation, and written - depends upon the nature of the job. Supervisors must determine which key behaviors are relevant to the individual position and evaluate this dimension according to those relevant behaviors.

Verbal/Oral Communication

1.Presents ideas in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.

2.Speaks at an appropriate speed, volume, tone, and pitch and maintains eye contact with audience.

DECISIVENESS/JUDGMENT

DEFINITION: Makes sound and justifiable decisions in a timely manner.

Decisiveness includes readiness to make decisions, render judgments, take actions, or commit oneself. Decisiveness deals with the number of decisions made and the time it takes to reach conclusions. Judgment is the quality of the decision or conclusion, including weighing alternative actions and making decisions that reflect the facts of a situation. Once all pertinent and available information has been analyzed and alternatives have been developed, individuals must consider the pros and cons of each alternative and select the best one. Judgment specifically deals with the quality of decisions based on given or available information.

Decisiveness and judgment must be balanced based on the urgency or time available to reach a decision, the availability of relevant information, the short or long term impact of the decision, and the effect upon resources, the University, students, or others.

DEFINITION: Uses employee(s) effectively. Gives decision making and other responsibilities to the appropriate employee. Supervisors must know about the need to delegate. Without this knowledge, they will overload themselves or refer matters that should be handled by them and their staff to higher levels.

When supervisors delegate effectively, they give the employee decision-making authority and room for action; clearly state the tasks, responsibilities, and controls; provide the necessary guidance and resources; sell the employee on a task=s importance; and fit the task to the employee=s skills and development needs. What is delegated (responsibility, authority, or data gathering), and the targeted person=s capabilities are important factors to consider in making these assignments.
