Student Acceptable Use Policy/Internet Safety Policy for

Students Attending Newton Public Schools

Introduction

It is the policy of the Newton Board of Education to ensure consistent application of the Newton Board of Education Networking and Computing Resources. These resources include the use of computers and access to the network. All students using the Newton Public School’s computing resources must adhere to the following standards of acceptable use.

The Newton Board of Education operates a technology protection measure (filtering software) in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act. However, it is virtually impossible to control all materials. Please work with us in helping your child understand and abide by these important rules.

The Newton Board of Education reserves the right to monitor student use and to ensure only authorized students are utilizing these resources. The use of these resources is a privilege. In addition, the Newton Board of Education reserves the right to intercept and/or quarantine these networking and computing resources, such as Internet mail and other Internet services that may pose a threat to the school district. A student that has violated these rules will be reported to the School administration for discipline. The discipline will be handled on a case-by-case basis depending on the severity of the infraction.

Acceptable/Safe Use

The following actions (not exhaustive) constitute acceptable use of the computer resources:

  1. Be polite and show respect

a) Use Kind and proper language

b) Treat others and equipment with respect

  1. Obey rules

a) Be honest

b) Use computer for educational purposes only

  1. Do not disclose personal information

a) Don not give out over the Internet personal information about you or others, such as address, phone numbers, passwords

  1. Research for assigned classroom projects
  2. Use of Internet solely for educational purposes

Unacceptable Use

The following actions (not exhaustive) constitute unacceptable use of the computer resources:

  1. Antisocial, offensive, harassing, defamatory or unethical behavior
  2. Activities that violate laws or regulations
  3. Unauthorized access to any networking or computing resource
  4. Use of the Internet for obtaining or distributing pornographic or sexually oriented materials is strictly prohibited
  5. Posting, sending, receiving and storing, or printing copyrighted materials without permission and/or proper citation
  6. Falsifying one’s identity to others while using the Internet
  7. Chat rooms
  8. Chain letters
  9. Vandalism

a) Abusive downloading

b) Destruction of equipment

c) Computer viruses

For the Student

I understand the importance of safe and respectful computer use. I also understand that if I break the rules, my use of the computer resources may be taken away. I agree to follow these rules.

As a parent or legal guardian, I hereby acknowledge that I have read and understand this acceptable use policy. I further recognize that if my child does not abide by the rules of acceptable use, he/she is subject to disciplinary action as indicated in the Parent/Student Handbook. I hereby give permission to the Newton Public School District to permit my child to have access to the school’s networking and computing resources. I further understand that this permission will remain in effect during the entire time my child is a student at NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL, and I will notify the school in writing if I wish to rescind this permission.

Please sign and return this form with your child’s registration materials to their Newton High School counselor. If the form is not received, your child will not have access to the high schools network and computing resources. Thank you.
