Literature Review Update (LSC 40025V1)

Module Manager:Professor T.J. Greenhough

Credits: 5 (Generic)

Aims:

The aims of this course are to encourage research students to critically appreciate the recent history and sum of research in their particular field, to be aware of the advances and refinements made in recent years and the rate and nature of research progress in real time, and to consolidate skills in the abstraction, synthesis, integration and storage of information from a wide variety of relevant literature.

Learning outcomes:

At the conclusion of the module successful students will be able to:

  1. Comprehensively describe recent progress in terms of the published literature in their research field
  2. Understand the recent advances in their research field in relation to earlier work
  3. Produce a coherent and well-structured written review of the recent published advances in their research field

Prerequisites:

Doctoral progression and successful completion of a literature review (for example LSC 40018). At least 18 months must have elapsed between successful completion of the first year (2nd year for PT PhD) literature review and submission of the update, which should normally take place no later than 6 months prior to the expected thesis submission date.

Summary of Assessment:

Formal assessment will be by assessment of the written literature review update by both the Lead supervisor and another member of the supervisory team (the advisor in ISTM) and will include a feedback interview with the second assessor. Assessment is subject to confirmation by ISTM PG Committee. Submission of the review update to the Secretary to the ISTM PG Committee will trigger the assessment process, and the electronic distribution of assessment forms.

Timing:

At least 18 months must have elapsed between successful completion of the first year (2nd year for PT PhD) literature review and submission of the update, which should normally take place no later than 6 months prior to the expected thesis submission date.

Summary of Content:

Searching for and retrieving recent published articles of direct and indirect relevance to the research field and published following preparation of the first year (2nd year for PT PhD) literature review; abstracting, synthesising and integrating information from a wide variety of relevant literature; discussing the preparation of the written report with the supervisory team and responding to suggestions for improvement; producing a coherent and well-structured review, which comprehensively describes and critically discusses recent progress in the research field as presented in the literature.

Guidelines for Activities:

The literature review, prepared under the guidance of the supervisory team, should be 3000-6000 words excluding the reference list and must be submitted to the Secretary to the ISTM PG Committee () no later than six months prior to the expected thesis submission date. The report will be assessed, with feedback, by the supervisory team as a coherent and accurate piece of work and corrections or additional written work may be required. The assessment is subject to confirmation by ISTM PG Committee.

Literature Review Update

Assessment and feedback

These forms, and a copy of the Literature review, will automatically be distributed electronically, by the Secretary to the Postgraduate Committee (), to the supervisory team on receipt of the Literature review.

Students will also need to make an entry in their Learning plan / PDLPunder LSC 40025V1 that the review has been submitted for assessment.

Successful completion of the Module and gaining of the 5 associated credits depends on completion of these forms by the supervisory team. See the Module Handbook for details of assessment and content.

There are two forms, one for the Lead supervisor, and one for the advisor (in ISTM). Assessment for students from other RIs will also use the standard forms but will be carried out by the Lead supervisor and one other member of the supervisory team.

The Lead supervisor should submit the completed assessment form (electronically and signed hard copy) to Lisa Cartlidge and copy electronically to the student and the second assessor (in ISTM, the advisor).

The second assessor (advisor in ISTM) will conduct a feedback interview with the student based on their own and the Lead supervisor's reports.

The second assessor’s (advisor in ISTM) form has two short sections. The first is to be completed by the second assessor while the second is an agreed statement following a feedback interview between the second assessor and the Student. Please note that both reports should be made available to the student prior to the feedback interview

Following the feedback interview the second assessor should return (e-mail and signed hard copy) their form to Lisa.

Lisa will copy the completed second assessor’s report to the Lead supervisor.
