COURSE DESCRIPTION: COLLEGE PREP CHEMISTRY/CHEM 100 – INTRODUCTORY CHEMISTRY

For students desiring an introduction to chemistry or requiring a course to update their knowledge of chemistry. Fundamentals stressed are atomic structure, bonding, molecular structure, solutions, acids and bases, chemical nomenclature, and stoichiometry.

PREREQUISITES: Completion of all reading courses required by the College Testing and Placement Program, and intermediate Algebra--MATH 051 with a grade of C or higher.Students should be taking or should have taken Algebra II for this course. Students should have received a grade of “B” or better in Biology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:This course is designed to give students an introduction to the science of chemistry and assumes the student has no previous experience with the subject. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • perform unit conversions
  • apply the scientific method in the world around them
  • name compounds by using their knowledge of chemical nomenclature
  • demonstrate the usefulness of the Periodic Table
  • predict chemical properties of elements using the Periodic Table
  • draw the electron arrangement of atoms
  • draw the molecular structure of simple molecules
  • write balanced chemical equations
  • predict product(s) of a chemical reaction
  • solve quantitatively a variety of chemical word problems
  • apply gas laws
  • apply stoichiometry to chemical reactions
  • specify concentrations of solutions in various units
  • identify acids, bases, conjugate acids, and conjugate bases
  • distinguish between a strong or weak acid/base
  • calculate the pH of simple solutions develop quantitative problem solving skills which can be systematically applied to the areas of chemistry and problems encountered in everyday life
  • apply concepts to explain occurrences in everyday life
  • demonstrate basic laboratory skills and techniques

CALCULATORS:

A non-programmable scientific calculator MUST BE USED. It should display scientific (exponential) notation and have logarithm functions.Cell phones, computers etc… may NOT be used as calculators. Programmable calculators are NOT allowed to use during the exams. Calculators mayNOT be shared during tests. The instructor will NOT provide calculators or instructions on how to use a calculator during exams.

INSTRUCTOR HELP:

Questions about the course material or other matters that cannot be addressed during class are handled before or after school. One on one instructor helpis an important student resource, please take advantage of it.

Please be respectful of yourself and the class by keeping cell phones off during class (especially during an exam — also, please turn off the vibration feature during exams).

ATTENDANCE/CONTACT POLICY:

LECTURE: Full attendance at each lecture is expected of the student. If you miss class, you are still responsible for the material covered that day. Refer to the tentative schedule or contact another student in class for the missed course material. PLEASE DO NOTask the instructor what you missed that day.

Regarding how important attendance is to this course, as per Administrative Procedure 661: The instructor may (a) Reduce course grades after unexcused absences exceed 10% of the total class hours that will take place throughout the course of the course. This equates to 6 lectures; (b)Drop a student from a class with the concurrence of the division administrator when unexcused absences exceed 15% (10 lectures) of the total class hours that will take place throughout the course and when the excessive absences preclude the possibility of the student completing the above stated objectives for the course.

EXAMS: Attendance is MANDATORY unless prior arrangement has been made. If you are going to miss an exam FOR ANY REASON, you MUST contact your instructor as soon as possible in person or via email or phone message stating you will be absent for the exam. Email: ; phone: 692-2108 ext 1.

  • An unexcused absence during the exam will result in zero score, NO EXCEPTIONS (this will count as your lowest score).
  • One of your lowest exam scores will be replaced with a higher final exam score.
  • Only persons with EXCUSED absences will be allowed to makeup an exam.

Excused absences are those due to: (a) illness with parent/doctor's note; (b) death in family, (c) unexpected emergencies, (d) excused by professor PRIOR to test (see above contact information).

Makeup exams must be taken within ONE DAY of the scheduled exam.

  • The final exam is multiple choices and cumulative, thus covering all of the material for the year.

LABORATORY: Attendance isMANDATORY. There are NO makeup labs. Failure to attend three or more experiments constitutes a failure for the course (not just the lab).If you are going to miss a scheduled lab FOR ANY REASON, you MUST contact your instructor as soon as possible in person or via email or phone message stating you will be absent for the laboratory. MASTERING CHEMISTRY:Mastering Chemistry is online homework/quizzes and tutorial system. It personalizes learning with tutorials that provide immediate feedback.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be due the night before the exam covering those chapters. Grade penalty is 10% for each day past the due date. Lowest grade for one homework assignment will be dropped per semester.

LABORATORY: As stated above, attendance for labs is mandatory. If you are going to miss a scheduled lab, you must contact the instructor as soon as possible so that plans can be made for makeup.

OVERALL GRADING:

Final grade will be calculated using the following percentage weights:

*To pass the course, a passing grade of C or better must be received for the laboratory.*

**It is important to note that your HACC grade may differ from your Powerschool/MHS grade due to weighting and final grade calculations. The Powerschool/MHS grade will be in place as a “grade check” or update for you as a courtesy. Do NOT expect this grade to mimic what gets recorded to HACC.**

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY:Honesty and integrity are the foundations to being a good student. The following behaviors will be considered cheating and WILL NOT BE TOLERATED:

  • Arranging with other students to give or receive answers on an exam.
  • Arranging to sit next to someone who will let you copy from his/her exam (in this case, both students involved will be considered to be cheating).
  • Copying from another student’s exam or laboratory assignments (or allowing someone to copy your work).
  • Plagiarism (copying material directly from the textbook or other sources to complete class assignments).
