HERSHEY CANDY PROJECT

What if……..

The research lab at Hershey Foods does a survey for a new candy bar.

Hershey Chocolate Company is designing a new candy bar. They need a name for the candy bar and a jingle.

What will the candy bar look like and what will the jingle sound like?

There will be a contest to see who creates the best song.

This is a 2-part activity:

A. Group Project –You will work in your group to choose a new candy bar. You will have 2 days of class time to complete this. If not finished, complete for Homework, due onthe next day.

You will:

  1. Invent a candy bar
  2. Name the candy bar
  3. Construct a design of the candy bar – use white construction paper and colored pencils
  4. Write Lyrics for the Jingle
  5. Start brainstorming on notebook paper
  6. Write lyrics, divide the syllables of the words(see examples)
  7. Write rhythms above the words (syllables)
  8. Show teacher finished rhythm with lyrics, in syllables.
  9. Each student should copy this into the graphic organizer

B. Individual Project–(NOT Group Activity)

You will:

  1. Write a Melody for the Jingle
  2. For Treble Clef
  3. 8 – 16 Measures (length of your lyrics)
  4. Use notes in the singing range (Middle C to Treble C, try to use mostly between Middle C and G)
  5. Use the keyboard to play the melody
  1. Finished Project should be on musical staff paper

with lyrics under the notes, done in Finale Program

(which is in the computer lab).

Step 1 Melody Directions:

  1. Use the Keyboard to find out what pitches you want to use. This is a melody so select notes that you can play on the Treble Clef. The melody should be singable.
  2. Write your song in the Key of C. (First & last note should be a Middle C).

3. Use notesmostly between Middle

C & G.

MELODY COMPOSITION DIRECTIONS for 7th Grade continued

  1. Do Not write on the Keyboard. Use a book to lean on.
  2. Write the letters of the notes you want under the Rhythm.

6. Here are 2 websites for Interactive Keyboards, so that you can work on your composition at home. (They are also on my webpage or moodle).

Step 2 - Transfer melody and rhythm to Staff Paper or put into Finale Program on the computer.

1. You can download at home for app. $10.00. (First check with your parents). Finale program is available in school computer lab.

C. Performance – Group Activity

1. Each group will learn the songs for the people in their group. Everyone sings; one person can play the keyboard.
