Job Title:Digital Media Assistant

Line managed by:Media Arts Creative Producer

Location:Community Arts North West (CAN), Oldham Street, Manchester city centre

Terms: This work placement is for someoneaged 16 to 19

It ispart time -1 day per week (to be arranged)

This post is paidat the national minimum wage, which is £5.03 per hourfor employees under 20 years of age

Duration:Fixed contract for 27 weeks.

From October 2013 to March 2014

Introduction

CAN is recruiting a part time Digital Media Assistant, aged 16 to 19, to work one day a week alongside our Media Arts Creative Producer in the day-to-day delivery of our media arts programme.

This is an exciting opportunity as part of the Curious MindsStrong VoicesProgramme for a creative and motivated young person, to gain valuable, paid work experience working for Community Arts North West (CAN), a nationally recognised arts organisation.

The job is one day a week and would suit somebody with digital media skills (for example photography, graphic design, video production, music production or web design) combined with a keen interest in social media.

Job Description

We would like to make the placement as flexible as possible so that we can involve the Digital Media Assistantinteresting projects that are relevant to their development. Some of the main duties and responsibilities are listed below and others will be worked out based on the interests and skillsof the successful applicant.

  • Digital documentation – including photography and video.For example helping to film and take photographs at performances and events
  • Contributing to our social media platforms.For example uploading media onto YouTube, Vimeo and Flickr and using social media channels like Facebook and Twitter to promote the company and generate audiences for events.
  • Updating online information. For example the CAN website and blogs created specifically for projects.
  • Supervising people’s use of the CAN Digital Media Lab. For example showing workshop participants how to use the equipment, keeping the Lab tidy and booking equipment in and out.
  • Supporting Digital Media training that is part of our artistic programme. For example the Do I.T. training to course that helps artists promote themselves better
  • Supporting Digital Media projects that are part of our artistic programme. For example Digital Sparks, our film project with the homeless community in Rochdale
  • Assisting and supporting the Media Arts Creative Producer with project management and admin tasks. This could range from taking minutes at meetings to helping with risk assessments, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Attending relevant conferences, seminars and networking events. For example Platforma, a national conference we are hosting about Refugee Arts at Manchester University.

Skills required:

  • Good literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Evidence ofexperience using digital media (for example photography, graphic design, video production, music production, web design or programming)
  • Evidence of experience of using a range of social media and an awareness of how social media can be used to market and promote events
  • Good communication skills and a willingness to get on with and communicate with people from different social backgrounds and cultures.
  • Willingness to travel by public transport as part of outreach programmes and to work occasional unsociable hours, including evening and weekends

  • To attend company meetings as required
  • To represent the Company to external bodies and organisations as required
  • To be familiar with the Company’s work attending workshops, rehearsals or performances, if appropriate.
  • To be willing to undertake training as appropriate to the post.
  • To ensure that all the work adheres to CAN’s policy guidelines including Health and Safety, Child Protection, Equal Opportunities, Dignity and Respect in the Workplace and Company Information Technology policies.
  • Together with other members of staff to develop, implement and monitor high quality service standards throughout the Company.
  • To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required in connection with the position.
