Stress Down Week

FREE activities and events across the University and the Students’ Union for all students and staff (booking may be required).

In addition to the activity programme below there will be a selection of information stalls around the University and Students’ Union throughout the week if you would like to collect some more information including practical less stress tips, and how to recognise stress in yourself and others and what support services are available.

Stress down on Monday with exercise

Sessions today include:

·  12.00pm - 1.00pm: Badminton drop-in session, Olympia Sports Hall

Just turn up and play for as long or as short amount of time as you want. All equipment provided.

·  1.00pm - 2.00pm: Pilates taster session, Olympia Sports Hall

A great way to relax and de-stress. Just turn up, no need to book.

·  12.00pm - 6.00pm: Gym trial

Want to join the gym but haven’t got around to it yet? Starting from 12.00pm there will be a one hour free trial session for anyone thinking of joining. These sessions will be led by one of our qualified staff. Booking is essential; the last booking is at 5.00pm. Email Hazel on to book.

Stress down on Tuesday –pamper yourself

Sessions today include:

·  Indian head massage, reflexology/foot massage, back and shoulder massage free taster sessions from 11.00am - 7.00pm in the Well-being Centre, second floor Brittan Building.15 minute taster sessions must be booked in advance, email

·  Reiki free taster sessions available from 4.00pm -7.00pm in the Well-being Centre, second floor Brittan Building. 15 minute taster sessions must be booked in advance, email

·  Free mini shape and polish on your nails or an arm and hand massage thanks to Middlesbrough college hair and beauty students here from 1.00pm - 4.00pm. 15 minute taster sessions in the Brittan Building Sports Hall. No booking required.

·  The Positivity Tree in the Students’ Union is the scene for a talk about stress and mental well-being encouraging students to understand and break down the stigma around mental health. 11.00am - 3.00pm. No booking required.

Stress down on Wednesday – focus on you, learn something new – booking essential

Sessions today include:

·  Introduction to mindfulness workshop, 12.00pm -1.00pm, M6.04, Sixth Floor Middlesbrough Tower. A free workshop to learn more about this hugely effective practice, which is becoming more and more popular. Mindfulness can help you improve focus, reduce anxiety and worry and generally feel more positive.

·  Working together to reduce stress workshop, 1.00pm - 2.00pm, M6.04, sixth floor Middlesbrough Tower, Staff only.

·  Understanding sleep workshop, 4.00pm - 5.00pm, CL2.10, 2nd floor Clarendon Building. Students and staff.

·  Introduction to mindfulness workshop, 5.00pm - 6.00pm, CL2.10, second floor Clarendon Building for all students and staff). Just in case you couldn’t make the lunchtime session this is a repeated workshop.

Stress down on Thursday – food and healthy eating

The food we eat can have an effect on our mental health and well-being. Some foods help us feel less stressed and some foods can make us more stressed. It might not be the way around that you think it is! Find out more when you visit one of the University or Students’ Union food outlets throughout the whole of Stress Down week.

·  All week in the Gallery restaurant on the second floor of the Students’ Union building there will be a different stress down meal full of nutritious stress down goodness every day. If you buy the stress down meal of the day you will receive a *free goody bag. (*only available in the Gallery and numbers of goody bags are limited).

·  The Food Co-op 11.00am - 1.30pm, first floor landing, Clarendon Building next to the School of Social Sciences, Business & Law. This exciting new enterprise project and student society is run by students. Membership of the food co-op is available to all students and staff. They will be holding a pop up stall for you to buy healthy snacks and produce, or just go along and have a chat. They are very interested to hear from anyone wanting to join or get involved. Please come along and support them.
